Is This What The Windows Start Menu Will Look Like?

The tiles in the start menu are ugly and inefficient. They need to make 9 and upgraded 7, not a re-imagined 8. Metro is the worst thing I have ever used. Multi display setups are difficult to use, and it feels like they only designed it for the Microsoft Surface.

There is a surprising amount of windows 8,1 hate in the comments. So far I have switched over my triple monitor setup to windows 8.1 and am having no problems with what people are saying. I just added start 8 and it is essentially exactly what I wanted. A lot of the annoying things that you had to do when setting up windows 7 are now automated, which is really nice. Also this start menu is exactly what someone had designed as a concept for a new windows start menu, and many people said that they had liked it and wished that microsoft had implemented it. Anyways, just try out windows 8,1 and mod it a bit before you bash it.

It's because people think Linux is useless from lack of software support even though the internet is safer to use than a Windows system with the best AV out there. Linux will only become 100% better than Windows once people realize the potential and start using it. Developers generally only support the most accessible OS which is Windows. If people were to have Linux on their machines and used it for a few hours a day, development for Linux would skyrocket and Windows wouldn't stand much of a chance.

Microsoft pretty much thinks they are invincible because Linux doesn't have much of a chance due to the fact there is a lack of Linux usage. It's a vicious cycle here and Linux really would be doing better if there was people using it but unfortunately most only see things 1 dimensionally and can't grasp the simple idea that having Linux and at least using it once in awhile might trigger some sort of encouragement from others to do the same.

I do have 8.1. Perhaps you should not jump to conclusions. I have to do plenty of work to make all of the default features work better on multi monitor setups. I want windows 9 to be 7 with better performance. The features they implemented in windows 8 were features people did not want/need. Windows 7 is already streamlined, just has less performance than newer os's. Windows 8 is too oriented to touch screen, the start screen is annoying, and it feels like they were trying to push innovation where none was wanted. I don't remember seeing anyone requesting touch screen capabilities, a star screen, laptops that turn into tablets, or any other unnecessary features. I am not sure what the "annoying things that you had to do when setting up windows 7" are but I can assure you, Windows 8 doesn't remove whatever annoying things you are talking about.

According to this statistic site, Windows 8 (includes 8 and 8.1) is incredibly low. Most people want Windows 7 because it's somewhat efficient, it's a desktop oriented OS, and is functioning perfectly fine. Windows 9 needs to drop the features 8 has, increase performance, and give back the UI. Let Apple deal with mobile + laptop fusion, or creating a platform dedicated to entertainment. Microsoft's strategy has always been providing a professional OS, and because of that it's used in the business world and the gaming world.

very nice. even though i am quite happy with windows 7 i am looking forward to installing 9. the ability to auto detectweather to boot desktop or metro depending on hardware is awesome

I know if you're into Adobe products or want to play the latest games ... then Windows is the only choice. But for the typical user there's more than enough free software which are frequently better than the quality of comparable proprietary software.

Not only Adobe. A lot of Autodesk products don't have a Linux release. As well as Nuke/NukeX which only runs on Red Hat Enterprise Linux. And a ton of other plugins like rendering engines, texturing plug-ins, lightning plug ins, nDo, dDo, and bla-bla-bla (the list goes on). Linux needs the support of professionals. If it has a bigger pro userbase - then Linux will get better driver support and more software being ported for Linux. The better drivers and blows and whistles support might eventually take a big bite of the gaming industry. It is like the domino effect. Too bad that the 1st piece is going to take a while to fall.

That's because those of us who have tried the OS and bothered to take five minutes to customize it and figure out how to make good use of it realize that it is an improvement over windows 7. I mean, I would take windows 8.1 any day of the week over 7 just because of the massively improved bluetooth.

The people complaining about windows 8 or metro are the ones who obviously either haven't tried the OS or are too lazy to customize it just slightly. If you get rid of Metro apps and just use it to hold your programs, it works wonderfully - the ones that you use frequently, you know exactly where they are... the ones that you don't, press the windows key, type three or four letters, and hit enter.

I don't know about you, but not having to take my hands off the keyboard sure sounds like an improvement to me. Yes you could do that with win 7, but it was much slower and less accurate.

I agree. I was one of those who was persistent in not upgrading to 8, but since I got it for free through a college program I gave it a shot on my home computer after deciding to buy a SSD and formatting my computer anyways.

Needless to say there is a noticeable performance increase, I like the live tiles for my pc games, facebook, netflix etc. The only thing that was cumbersome at first was figuring out how things work (like getting the charms window to show up).

I still use Win7 on my work computer though.

Of course with every new Windows there is going to be some improvements. Otherwise there wouldn't be any need to get a new OS for the same things. However, i did take 5 minutes to mess around with W8 and i got enough to figure out that it's not for me, i am perfectly fine with Windows 7 and that MS didn't get things right until later, even then W8x is a work in progress but why should i spend hours updating a system, then tweaking it to make it fit my needs. I already got that with W7 and most of the functionality is already there so i don't have to install a start menu because i already got one with W7. Most people are not going to see the necessity of updating their OS, reinstalling their programs and finding a suitable start menu replacement unless they absolutely need something of W8 such as improved bluetooth support. Again though, other then the extra 3 years W8 has ahead of W7 there isn't much reason for me or many people to upgrade to it. If i was still on Vista and enjoyed using it i probably would be on that instead of W7 or from XP i would probably be on Linux. But i was lucky enough that W7 was good enough that i decided to switch (besides my PC being too slow with Vista).

I tried W8 and didn't like it. Even then i don't think it's worth going to but i guess that's me and whoever else that finds W8 unnecessary. And MS should have never removed the start menu, W8 would have been more positive if MS left the UI alone or just added the start screen as an optional thing. I wasn't forced to use the Aero effects and i could shut it off any time i want to, so it really makes no sense why MS would remove the start menu and force the start screen on everyone.

Will Microsoft still criminally refuse to tell all customers who bought Windows 8 and Updated to Windows 8.1 that our REPAIR/REFRESH DVD Will no longer work?

Will Microsoft still criminally refuse to tell all customers who bought Windows 8 and paid to Update to the Media Center Edition that our REPAIR/REFRESH DVD Will no longer work?

Up to Hundreds of hours of problems that untold thousands of people have had because of that criminally negligent secret.

I ended up with the Free LinuxMint 17.
20-years of buying Microsoft and from last year I would like to see it go bust.

Both options work fine for me.
