As my build below, I'm still running good with a 3900X but wondering if upgrading to a 5900X worth it since the CPU is on sale via AMD Ryzen 9 5900X 12-Core 3.7 GHz Desktop CPU - Newegg.com.
I personally went from a 3900x to a 5800X3D the moment it released and have had no regrets. The IPC and clock speed increases on the 5800X3D makes it perform only about 20% behind the 3900x in multi. Either way, I was rarely getting use out of the full 12c/24t 3900x. The games I was playing at the time I upgraded had massive .1% and 1% low increases even at 1440p. I have yet to get rid of my 3900x, I think its going to be donated.
That is awesome! I have the 3900x and a 2x8gb 3600 cl16 kit of RAM left over. I was thinking of donating it to someone like this. I do not know of a lot of folks like this where I live unfortunately. And it would be a great gift if you did. Karma is real.
I recently did some upgrading and was left with a 3800x, 2070 Super and 16GB of 3200 DDR4. We moved a great guy from our Mexico City office to Michigan a year ago. He's a great young man who recently married and sending money home to help support his family. He always wanted to get into PC gaming so I put a little bit of cash into it for him....
3800x (used)
Peerless Assassin 120 ($36)
Corsair LPX 3200 (donated)
Asus 2070S (donated)
Asus ROG B550-F Wifi II (open box $160)
2TB of M2 SSD storage ($120)
Evga 750 watt psu ($100)
Lian Li Meshcool II (open box $76)
Corsair K63 wireless keyboard (donated)
The 32" Viewsonic 75Hz was donated from our boss at work.
The utter surprise and shock on his face was well worth it!
That's interesting you went from a 3700X to a 5900X, perhaps a slightly easier upgrade to justify I think because you are getting more cores as well. That would be my expectation though, smoother frame rates. It wouldn't be an upgrade I would make personally but I prefer large upgrades.

Have you considered the 5950X? That's also much cheaper where I live now and that at least gets you 4 more cores over what you currently have.(2) RYZEN 9 5900x vs RYZEN 7 5800x3d (TEST IN GAMES + BENCHMARK) - YouTube
You guys are definitely correct about the difference between these two CPUs and since I corrected my fans the higher temps should not be a concern. Then again, the 5800x3d may push my 2080ti above its limits since most of the videos I saw were 3080+. My final choice around Memorial Day will be based on CPU sale prices and possibly upgrading to a 7900xtx, still may go with the extra cores of the 5900x though.
No, unless you aren't happy with your cpu's performance. But a 3900x to a 5900x wouldn't be much of an upgrade. You would be better off waiting for ryzen 8000 for an upgrade or getting a 5800x3d if you really need better gaming performance. If you need better "workstation" performance, shell out the extra for a 5950x or 3950x.As my build below, I'm still running good with a 3900X but wondering if upgrading to a 5900X worth it since the CPU is on sale via AMD Ryzen 9 5900X 12-Core 3.7 GHz Desktop CPU - Newegg.com.
Not anymore because I've watched many videos of the 5800x3d, and it still outperforms the 5950x in gaming and it a very close match to the current 7600x. I do however what a balance of gamming and workstation without building a whole new system and that's where the 5900x comes in to play. I'm currently in the beginning stages of rendering with Topaz AI and it does taxes my 3900x and 2080ti a bit.Have you considered the 5950X? Yes the 5800X3D will win in all games, the problem with the 5800X3D is it's less cores than you currently have. If you do anything else then the 5900X and 5950X are better at multi-tasking.Not anymore because I've watched many videos of the 5800x3d, and it still outperforms the 5950x in gaming and it a very close match to the current 7600x. around 33% with everything closed and nothing just the AI running. Takes about 2hr to complete one video form 720p to 2k on Nvidia High settings and 4-6 hrs. for upscaled at 4k.Yes the 5800X3D will win in all games, the problem with the 5800X3D is it's less cores than you currently have. I've used Topaz Video Enhance AI extensively for the last few years, I'm not sure a new CPU is going to have much impact on rendering performance coming from a 3900X.
When you say it taxes your 3900X, can I ask what sort of CPU load you have?
That doesn't sound like its pressuring your 3900X too much though, you still have plenty of power to do other things while it's doing it. I get significantly higher usage than that but I'm running with a 3080 and 10850K and the latter has fewer cores.around 33% with everything closed and nothing just the AI running. Try AmazonUgh, so far, the only 5800x3d available only comes with a complete build but will keep searching.
I upgraded from 3950X to 5950X and honestly i can't tell the difference. You can look at benchmarks all you want but ultimately there's been no visible 🖥👀 difference besides slight changes in power management.
This is why I prefer large upgrades, it's much less impressive if your already on capable hardware.I upgraded from 3950X to 5950X and honestly i can't tell the difference. I upgraded from a 3900x to 5900x and the framerate increase was definitely noticed.
According to TechDeals he highly suggests you sell your 3900x and put a 5900x in the system, cause its decent upgrade, after you sell the 3900x your not out a TON of money either.
Should be able to get around 200 out of the 3900x CPU.
Depending if you coul djust sell the cpu,ram/mb as a whole, and get a 7900x combo at MC for 600, that might be the overall better uplift, for maybe about 300, instead of 100.
YMMV>
