Question Is upgrading to a 4070 Super a good idea for 1440 gaming for someone who does not play many new games?

I built my first gaming PC in December of 2019, a 2070 Super + Ryzen 5 3600

It has been great and still is! I play mostly games from 2020 and before and honestly much, much older than this

I do not like new games, I see none on the horizon that really tempt me but DO WANT to play Elden Ring and Hogwarts eventually

I saw the 4070 Super and the price and thought this might be a decent time to upgrade but it is hard because I really have no need to but I do want to be rather future proofed for 4-5 years

Also figured it has been this long might as well wait until Battlemage is launched and the 50 Series is launched but wanted to ask your opinion

I think it'd be a waste of money to upgrade to something that powerful, when you don't play newer games, even if you would play those two games you mentioned. Their system requirements aren't that high. I hope this helps! 😀

Hogwarts Legacy is a very demanding title, and the 8gb vram can be limiting in said title, especially at 1440p. I would not choose a 4070s though. 12gb ram is not going to be enough for 4-5yrs, at 1440p. Your CPU would hold back a 4070s, even at 1440p, in Hogwarts as well. If you are wanting a 4-5yr 1440p rig, that will be able to play those games, or ensure you are setup for something you may want to play in the future, you need a CPU and a GPU upgrade.

I would be getting a 5800x3D more than likely as well

CPU and GPU selection depends heavily on display resolution and target framerate. Both are unstated in the post. A 4070(S/Ti) with 12GB VRAM will be fine at 1080p, and likely 1440p for more than a few years. At 2160p(4K) they're strained now. That said if your budget allows, aim for a comparable 16GB card as some games are just VRAM pigs. CPU wise the X3D variants are a good investment for an aging AM4 rig.

*Keep an eye out for price drops on AMD cards soon, if Super prices land anywhere near MSRP AMD will likely respond with some cuts.

(Edit) I see it is 1440p target in the header.
