Is using a laser mouse with a soft mouse pad really going to cause major problems?

I know that a hard mouse pad is ideal for laser mice but for someone like me who is not a hardcore gamer and does not need absolute tracking perfection (not to mention my mouse isn't exactly high end either), will a soft mouse pad suffice?

I've never had an issue using a g500 laser mouse on a softpad, been doing it for around 4 years.

actually one of the characteristics of laser mice, is that they could be used on many different surfaces, compared to optical ones.
