So atm I have a Gigabyte Z68 AP D3 motherboard, with crossfire capability, 4 dual channel RAM slots and an LGA 1155 socket.

I was wondering how long it could last me? I was aiming for like 4 years hopefully, then I would consider it money well spent.

Solution
It all depends on what you are going to be using it for.

What CPU and graphics card(s) are you planning on using?

It's the cheapest Gigabyte Z68 chipset motherboard. The two PCIe x16 slots are only operable at x16/x4 so it's already crippled.

Solution
you will get 4 years out of it
first year or two max settings
3third year medium settings
last year recommended settings :D

buy the best value for your money, try to stay out of best components as they cost more for alittle performance increase.

2500k is a great value cpu for a gamer

I have been spending money I otherwise didn't need to spend on MoBos w/ "future proof" features since the late 1980's. Hundreds of builds later, I have yet to benefit from any of those investments. In all of those builds I have found it worthwhile to:

Change a CPU - once (P600 for a P300 and only cause I was building for someone who wanted a 300 well after 600 came out and I switched them. That machine still running 24/7 BTW (11 years).

Upgrade an OS - never

Add RAM - 30% of the time

Replace GFX Card - 5% of the time

Add 2nd GFX Card - in last 4 years .... 50 % of the time

Used a MoBo "futureproof" feature - Never
