Hey guys hopefully someone here can help me out, I just built my first PC last night booted it up and everything went well the only issue I'm having is with my graphics card, I installed it to the motherboard properly, everything is lit up and plugged into the correct spot. The issue
I'm having is I can only get an image to display from the VGA or HDMI of the motherboard, I get nothing when I'm plugged into the graphics card. After the initial boot I put the driver disk in and installed the software and still I get nothing. The graphics card is a MSI Twin Frozr GTX 970, the motherboard is a Gigabyte Z97X-Gaming 5 G1 gaming motherboard. Thanks in advance for any help you can provide me with, like I said this is my first build so I'm hoping it's a beginners mistake.

That would be correct. Also, PCI-E, not PCI. They are two different things.

Yes, reseating (removing and inserting again) the card would be my suggestion. All the evidence is pointing to the possibility that the system is not detecting it. Also, make sure your 6-pin PCI-E power connectors are in all the way. There are tabs on them that should click in...

Just tried it and got an error saying The graphics driver could not find compatible graphics hardware.

It clicked into the PCI slot, do you think I should shut down pull it out and try to connect it again? It is only the power cord and the card sliding into the PCI slot that needs to be done to the card correct?

If the card isn't getting all the power it needs, that could cause issues as well.

YEah I know the PCI-E I was just being lazy typing it, I plugged in the 8 pin connector too since I had the option with my PSU, should I only have the 6 pin connected?

Wait... I'm having a hard time understanding you. Looking at the power connectors on the MSI Twin Frozr 970, it needs a 6-pin and and 8-pin for external power. Are you saying you you only have one plugged in? You will need both for the card to function properly.

Put a 6-pin connector in the 6-pin, and an 8-pin (or, I suppose, 6+2 pin) in the 8-pin. Make sure they're both in all the way.

That I did not know, I thought it was one or the other not both, I'll try that once I get back and update. Thank you so much.

Hello MrKite,

Welcome to PC Master race. Great work on your first build, I hope you had a fun experience building it urself. Your Mobo and GPU is perfect, however there are some things that is not allowing your GPU to display, troubleshoot the following

1. Check power connection from PSU to GPU, make sure its plugged in nicely and when you switch ur PC the fans should be working, then plug in the video cord from GPU to monitor
if 1 does not work then,

2. The PSU supplying power to GPU is not enough, may I know your PSU wattage. Then im afraid you may have to purchase new more power wattage PSU
if 2 does not work then,

3. Go to BIOS screen, every mother board has one like when gigbyte logo appears press the button its says that will direct you to bios/setup screen. From there make sure that your MoBo recognises your GPU. If not recognised contact your seller.
if 3 does not solve the issue

4. Try different port of the GPU to Monitor maybe that port is broken, Try HDMI to HDMI or DVI D to DVI D. If this does not work then maybe its your GPU, contact the seller for refund or exchange.

Hope this Helps :)

Here's the pics hope this helps. The one image that I have a red circle on is what I thought I did wrong. The PCI-E cable that came with my PSU has the 6 pin with the addition of 2 pins making it 8 which is what I have connected.

Hi HiggsPrime, I built it using the pcpartspicker website, and it said everything was compatible. Where at in BIOS would I find to see if the motherboard is recognizing the the GPU?

Hello MrKite,

In your picture your PSU is modular connect another 8pin(remove the last 2 to make it 6pin) or 6pin to that RED Round Circle area. That is the only thing you are missing. Once you connected your GPU should not have any problems.

In the BIOS there shouldbe a section I forgot about the GIGABYTE BIOS layout but I am sure there is somewhere. Find something like PCIe 3.0 (x16).

If the GPU still does not work let us know again.

I'm a little confused by that, are you saying leave what I have connected and connect another 6 pin to the open 6 pin slot on the GPU? So basically the 8 pin and 6 pin both need to be plugged in? If you saying only the 6 pin though I tried that and I get no power to it. Thanks for you help, I'm going crazy right now.

Hello MrKite,

Dont worry I know the feeling of your first build and not working, dont panic, take a deep breath and chillax and say "It is goin to work".

Basically connect "both" 8pin and 6pin on the GPU from the PSU.

Let me know if it works. :-

You need both power connectors populated by power cables from the power supply, as I mentioned to you earlier.

Different card, but the same idea.

Now because I shut the computer down improperly because I couldn't see to shut it down properly I can't get anything, it powers up and I get nothing, I saw the BIOS menu hit delete and it just goes black. This sucks!!

Update:
I gave it a minute now I'm in BIOS I'm going to make sure the right PCI slot it set save and exit boot, then shut down plug the 6 pin in along with the 8 pin and pray. hahaha
