My build is roughly 8 yrs old. I bought the Ryzen 1800x when it came out. I've been planning to upgrade as far as the 7800x3d but when I heard the Ryzwn 9xxxx were coming, I needed an excuse to wait lol. Here's my "old build." I plan to go all MSI for this one and probably no OC (CPU):
(It's been a while so I forgot the actual names of the components)

Ryzen 1800x
Corsair Hydro AIO cpu cooler 360i
Corsair 1000i PSU
16GB Ryzwn RAM
27" Asus ROG IPS Gsync monitor 1440p monitor
Samsung 1TB NVMe I think Gen3 (I think 920)....still going strong!!!
Asus ROG 1080ti <-----yes! still! Still runs too!
Windows 10

When I play and my daughter plays the sims, it stutters and it stutters when we play American Truck Simulator. One thing that gets me, when I turn on my system, my monitor doesn't even go on. I have to unplug it and plug it back in at which point it does turn on. Looking on forums, it seems like my monitor is on its way out. Another reason to quit procrastinating!

I shouldn't have procrastinated. I see prices are insane!

I've been out of the loop for sometime but I was wondering:

1. Have OLEDs been the go to for gaming?
2. Artic MX still the go to for CPU paste?
3. Sound cards are not really needed? (Though I've been using my monitor's speakers and I have to say, yuck. I did get a USB Creative sound bar and love it!)

The route I was going to go (main new parts) for Amazon Prime day possibilities and probably this summer.....

MSI 700r case
32gbx2 64GB G.skill Ram (on the motherboard compatability list)
Ryzen 9800x3d
MSI 870e Edge mobo
MSI MAG Coreliquid A13 360
MSI A13 360 AIO cpu liquid cooler
Was eyeing the curved MSI montiors :)
Samsung 990 NVMEe or MSI.....not sure. Not sure of size too
MSI 5070ti Vanguard
Windows 11 of course

For reference, i play, American Truck Simulator, No Mans Sky, Cities Skylines (also CS II at some point), Civ 6, ARA, Sims 4, Planet Coaster 2, Planet Zoo. I might go back to Skyrim.

Thoughts?

In relation to your graphics card and monitor, IMO one of the most important aspects to take care with. If you are going with and are always going to stay with NVIDIA graphics solutions, I would consider official G-Sync compatibility as one of the first limiters on selection. If you might use AMD (more on that in a second) then it is worthwhile to consider FreeSync Premium monitors with the nod towards (unofficial) G-Sync compatibility.
In addition to that you need to pay attention to your cabling to be sure you have the proper cable for best transmission.

I know it sounds silly, but you could have the best gaming machine money can buy, put it on a 60Hz office monitor and it will look like crap. A good monitor and graphics solution pairing are a super important and often overlooked aspect of the build process. Most people keep their monitor for longer than the build, so in that instance is where that dual Sync capability can be more important. In addition to that aspect when you are using AMD to AMD (CPU/GPU) there are other advantages to quality, sync, and the FSR (and so on) capabilities of the system.

Think it is pretty cool that the old 1800X system is still kicking. You didn't list a motherboard, but you may well be able to update that system as a good gift or stopgap.

I mean, you could probably stretch that platform out another 2 - 3 years if you wanted. AM4 still has some gaming legs provided you can upgrade to a 5700X3D or 5800 X3D, those can handle up to an RTX 4090. But updating your bios, doubling the ram to 32GB, and getting an RX 9070 XT or RTX 5070 TI would put you in a pretty good place for several years.

It will be important which motherboard he got back then. Some of the 3xx series motherboards don't have a large enough BIOS chip to update all the way into 5xxx without having a 2xxx on hand as support for 1xxx may be dropped along the way. In some cases the manufacturer didn't even bother updating BIOS support.

The biggest issue with a 5800X3D right now is it is the top of the stack AM4 "gaming" chip. Anything new or used is overpriced. The 58/59xx variants are workable options, if not the absolute best that could be sourced for the platform. Issue becomes $-FPS at that point and being compared to the value proposition that 7xxx is starting to become. Obviously, there are a lot of ins and outs to what I am saying here but to say that it may not be worth paying a premium to find a 5800X3D for an X370 motherboard that may not even support all the features you would want out of that CPU. This isn't even touching on the RAM issues from the 300 chipset for Ryzen. It starts becoming smarter long term to look at AM5.

Just food for thought.

Motherboard compatibility is a fair point, @mikeny, do you know what your current motherboard is? Is upgrading your current platform even a route you'd be willing to go down? What is your budget for this?

I have the Asrock Taichi for the Ryzen 1800x. I think I just saw the 1080ti will not get anymore updates too. I actually set up a wishlist for Prime Day and on Newegg too though, the prices, WOW! Watching Microcenter, Amazon and Newegg.

I set up this wishlist:

ryzen 9800x3d
MSI Edge x870e
G.Skill NEO Trident Z5 64GB (32x2GB) DDR5 6000 (PC5 48000) CL30 (yes on the compatability list)
MSI 700r case
MSI MAG CoreLiquid I360 White CPU AIO cooler
Samung 990 pro NVME 2GB
I might sneak in a Creative Sound card (if it fits)
Monitor- I have to replace my 27" Asus ROG 1440p monitor as it only turns on when I unplug and plug it back in. (Im looking at a 32" curved screen. Might stay with IPS and not get OLED.
MSI PSU AI1000p Platinum (out of stock or 1000gl)

Asrock Taichi for the Ryzen 1800x
That motherboard supports up to a Ryzen 7 5800X3D, so you do have a good upgrade path from your 1800X. You'll need to do like 3 or 4 BIOS updates though, depending on what bios revision you're on. You could upgrade to 32 or 64GB RAM, and throw in an RX 9070 XT or 5070 Ti. Those changes would keep your PC in a good spot for a few years. I undertsand if you still want to upgrade everything though, your wishlist should work just fine if you do.

Indeed. I was thinking the 9800x3d or wait for the new Ryzens in 2026. Maybe I'm just looking for an excuse to hold off. Even though it seems my monitor might be dying, I'm still able to use it and it still works. I don't do work on it. This is strictly my gaming PC. What I have been noticing lately when playing, I've been getting some lag. Though I don't play online games, the fact Im noticing it, is making my OCD turn on.

I just looked up my old motherboard from pcpartpicker- it's the x370 Taichi

My budget...within reason- won't splurge on a RTX 5080/5090 or Ryzen 99xxx3d. No overclocking either.

I was also thinking of going down from Full tower to mid tower.

Make sure the monitors power cable is fully seated on the outlet and monitor side of the cable. Also make sure the display cable is fully seated on the monitor and graphic card side. If you still have these issues try a different port on the monitor, graphics card, or both. If you still have the issue regardless of the above, you could try opening up the monitor and inspecting the power plug port and PCB for damage or loose screws. Make sure the power is disconnected and the display cable is disconnected from the monitor before you open it up. If the either the display ports, power port, or the PCB is loose and there are screws, try tightening them to just barely hand tight. If none of the above does anything, then there is likely something actually going on with the PCB for the monitor.

Personally, my build started out with a 3900X on my current motherboard and I have since added a 5800X3D the day they came out, and went from a 3080 to a 5090 for my 4k OLED monitor. At 4k the 5X00X3D CPUs are still strong enough, but at 1440p and below I get very clear bottlenecking of the CPU.
