I am so pissed I cannot believe what this X850XT has done to me...arghhh! I put this card in two weeks ago, the fan drove me nuts so I had it replaced with a Artic Cooling Silencer 5, which did the trick. Temps never rose above 58 while playing WoW at full settings, idled around 36. Today, started getting green snowy artifacts on screen. Then resolutions kept changing and artifacts were all over the screen. Then nothing, screen went black....game over. The temp was only at a max of 56. WTF!!!
I am now screwed as I voided my warranty by putting on the Silencer 5. This is unbelievable, I am so disappointed...I put back in my X600 and all is fine, what can I do?

Did you try to doo cooler mounting one more time?
Everything from beginning?
Meyby that will help.
I wrote somewhere in this forum that termal paste can go in conflict with
resistors around GPU and then shit happens (artifacts etc.)

Which temperature sensor from the card did you use? It has two; and while one of them reaches (in my case) about 50-60C the other one goes up to 95C... Probably you checked the wrong one...

Initially I was using Catalyst but that was causing lock-ups so I switched to Omega drivers and ATI Tool to check temps. I am pretty sure I had the right temp though as both Catalyst and ATI tools were reading the same. I am going to be disassembling the cooler from the card today and trying to reapply everything. If that doesnt work I guess I will try and get the stock cooler on it and see if I can RMA it.
It's just really strange, the temps were fine I cant understand why it was artifacting that badly. Thanks for the input keep it coming, if I cant RMA it then Im screwed and willing to try anything.

Damn man, that sucks. I'm one of the guys who recommended getting the silencer. 56 degrees is nothing, the card should be fine even in the high 70's. This reminds me, I still need to sell my X850XT PE....

Did you get the AGP or PCI-E? That card is almost top 'o the line for AGP, but as for PCI-E, it sucks a mountain of ass.

Just out of my own morbid curiousity, was this an actual ATI card or 3rd party?

Card was PCI-E, Sapphire was the manufacturer. Unbelievable, so disappointed. Anyways, today we removed the silencer and reinstalled the stock cooler, put it back in the computer and....same problem....looks like frozen pixels and artifacts all over the place. Anyways, I am gonna RMA it back to Newegg and gonna try and get a replacement. I have been told they are great about replacements and such. Hopefully the next one will be of better quality 😀.

Did you go to ati's website and get the latest drivers ? The newer ones require you have net-framework 1.1 installed on your machine in order to work properly. You can also get that at ati's website. Some of those off the wall drivers do more harm than good.

I would also get atitool, and install it. Go to the "settings" tab on the bottom, and then "click open" the box on the top for fan control, and override the fan speed to 100% after reinstalling your aftermarket cooler. Mine only gets to 51c after usage. idles in the low 30's.

If you do the above, for your card, go into the device manager and delete the ati stuff, then reboot before you install anything new.

Yeah I did all that, installed newest ATI drivers first...then went to Omega drivers when Catalyst was locking up. I have ATI tools and set all the fan speeds...heat was not the issue, never got above 60.

Okay well kudos to Newegg they are replacing my X850XT, hopefully the new one will work! I am gonna wait on reinstalling my Silencer 5 though, I dont want to risk blowing my warranty again. As happy as I am about the replacement I would like to know what happended with the last card. I mean it was fine for the first week and never overheated, well I guess I will never know 😀. Anyways, I better prepare to wear my headphones again with this stock fan...but is sure beats being out $200 bucks!
