Hello,

A friend has some spare parts to sell:

I can buy either a Phenom 2 x6 1055T or a newer I3 - 3220 processor. (I am not sure on the OC potential of either, so lets assume both are going to be run at stock)

This will be used for gaming; WoW, Day-Z, Rust, Mobas etc.

I do realize that the newish Ivy Bridge processors do pack a punch in gaming, but my thoughts are how would it fare against a processor with more cores?

Any input would be appreciated!

Kind Regards,
Daz.

I would honestly probably just go with the i3 ivy bridge, it's much stronger per core and the 1055t is clocked low along with the cores being much weaker. Unless it's being sold for extremely cheaply the newer clocked higher fx6300/6350 would be better, they're only like $110 brand new, i3 costs the same brand new basically. And if the i3 one day were to not be enough you could just plop in an i5

The better question would be though, if you were to choose the AMD cpu would it even be paired with a good motherboard? To get a good overclock and for it to not throttle you need to have a good motherboard, at least the 90 dollar Asus R2.0 970chipset motherboard. IIRC those Phenom x4 and x6 are 125w cpu and alot of the cheap AMD motherboards...
As far as I know, the i3 can't overclock. I think phenom is slightly better than the i3. In regards to the games you'll be playing, I think the i3 would be better than the phenom, because those are mostly single threaded games. But if you plan on playing more than just those games, then the phenom would do better probably.

Thanks for the reply.

If I were to OC the 1055T to match the i3 3220 3.3Ghz clocks would it perform just as good in the single threaded/2/3 core optimized games?

In short for the games you're wanting to play, the i3 would be much better. Many more games only rely on 1-2 cores than the 4+ that people like to harp on now. BF4 and Crysis 3 and Watch Dogs are the only games that seem to benefit from more cores although a good i5 would still be better (all kinda meh dude-bro shooters imo... having played them all)

depending on what he's selling it for, it might just be better to look for a 2nd hand sandy bridge/ivy bridge i5 cpu on ebay/amazon
