My pc has been trying for about a month now to update Java from 1.4.2_06 to
1.5..
to no avail. Everytime the Windows Installer starts, an alert box comes up
stating that the Installation Package is not valid. I've tried to download &
run the update from Sun and I get the exact same message. I've tried to
manually download the update & run it in TYPICAL mode and it goes almost
through setup until the very end when it states that the directory is locked
and I need to close any browsers (that aren't even open) and retry - it
finally forces me to exit the setup, but shows that it is installed (but it's
really not). I've tried to run it in CUSTOM mode, choosing my own directory
and it still tells me that the directory is locked and I need to close any
browsers (that, again aren't even open) - which forces me to exit setup.
I have Windows XP Home Edition SP2 and had JRE 1.4.2_05 and _06 - I
accidentally deleted the 05 version and I feel that this may be a
contributing cause. In my control panel (my Windows Control Panel) Java used
to show up as "Java" only and since then it's showing up as "Java Plug-In"
Please help me so I can get past this annoying problem! I would greatly
appreciate it!!
Thank You
