For all those taking issue with this article, I'm pretty sure this was a humor article.

Jeez Avram - you sound like a sales guy from the outskirts of Nvidea. I mean Come on. And BTW I just bought last week two cards GTX 1080 TI one for 290 and one for 220 on Ebay. Both work great. I do video editing and streaming in my studio so its the rendering time I care about. I'll wait.

Small history lesson, some might say its been downhill since '07, when tom's was acquired by Bestofmedia Group. Bestofmedia was acquired by a company currently named Purch Group, the same company that acquired Anandtech shortly after in 2014.

tom's has been cycling through people in the editor-in-chief role rather briskly for a while now. I guess Purch Group couldn't find the right person to properly monetize the site, but with articles like this, maybe they've finally got their man.

Since Avram is editor-in-chief, and not just some average joe contributor, I wonder if its too much to ask what his financial interest in nvidia might be, if he's a shareholder, etc.

What the hell is this article, a paid advertisement for Nvidia?
Tomshardware is supposed to be about detailed evidence based comparisons and informed advice. We currently have no actual useful data on the performance of the RTX lineup. I'm still angry at Jensen for saying that there will not be a new gaming lineup "anytime soon" 2 months ago, then revealing this. Meanwhile I bought a GTX 1080 (great card by the way) for full price thinking they would not come down in price "anytime soon". What a Jerk.

I wouldn't say that the FX 5000 series worked out well for them. Their low end 5200 cards under-performed and their high end 5800 Ultra sounded like a dust buster. Worse yet, the ATI (before bought by AMD) cards outperformed them in comparative classes. That was one of the better times were ATI was able to gain ground in market share. Everyone one I knew outside Nvidia diehards ran ATI 9500/9600/9700 cards. Need For Speed: Undergound and World of Warcraft were our primary games to play at the time. With that said though, the FX 6000 series did help reverse that trend.

I think all the different advice is correct, depending on who you are. If you're rich and like bleeding edge definitely buy now, I'm sure you'll have a lot of fun with these cards. If you are in immediate need to build a computer right now and can afford it, then future proof yourself. If you've already got a good rig and are just wondering whether it is worth upgrading I would wait till the benchmarks, manufacturing and drivers mature, and competition settles the pricing. If you are on a tight budget, then buy an older card at a great value. It's all good!

Another thing to keep in mind besides what games you would have to pick up that would add to the price is will you have to upgrade your power supply to use these cards. If you don't see much that would require a ~$2000 card then why not wait and see?

I admire Avram Piltch for having the courage to write this opinion piece. Gamers have been chomping at the bit for months for new video cards, and now that they're finally here, these same gamers can't complain loudly enough! If you already have a 10-series GTX card, you don't need a 20-series. The new cards will be faster, but only incrementally so. If you have an older video card, you can upgrade to the GTX 20-series. Are the new 20-series cards too pricey? Great news, the release of the new cards is driving down the price of the 10-series, so you can upgrade to one of those. If you want blazing graphics performance and fantastic pricing, light a candle and pray to Lisa Su. If she can deliver miraculous CPU products that are truly industry-shaking, maybe she can do it with graphics cards, too.

I really think this person's opinion doesn't apply to 95% of the people out there. If your goal is to buy the latest and greatest all the time, I do 100% agree that for those people, waiting for a price drop is a losing game. You're either in or you're not. Nvidia does a great job managing supply in their favor. You don't see fire sales. For the rest of us informed buyers on a budget, we wait to see how this new gen performs in real life, compare it to what our own performance goals and budgets are, and move forward accordingly. I certainly wouldn't accept the hype and buy on that alone unless you are way overdue and the pre-order supply is looking worrisome.

5 bucks says turning on both ray tracing and 4k in BF5 will cause frames to tank on the 2080. Next gen it'll run 60 fps plus. Just saying.

I don't advocate waiting for a price drop. I am advocating waiting till NDA's are lifted, and we get actual test results, and not cherry picked Nvidia slides. I don't care what company it is. They are not going to get my money based on just company claims.

Ah yes, from the author of that "Why Using an Ad Blocker Is Stealing" over on Tom's Guide a few years back. Those ad blockers must not be hurting you too bad if you can afford an RTX 2080, and justify it with what is essentially "live a little!"

Pathetic article. Gamers should revolt and not buy this new RTX card just because of this piss poor article. I used to love Toms but now I have to reconsider my time time spend here.

$600+ where are the lower end cards I want to see the 1060 and 1050 TI replacements. Honestly playing $600+ which is more than my Morgage and Car payment combined for 1080p gaming seems like a massive overkill, if anything I would invest in a used 1080 TI and be happy for another 3-4 years.

Toms just posted an article two days ago contradicting this article: https://www.tomshardware.com/news/wait-to-buy-nvidia-geforce-rtx-gpus,37673.html

Either way, Ray-tracing and DLSS hold no interest for me at the mo... Second, the pricing. These cards would fit me into a nice board, CPU, cooler and RAM upgrade(s). Third, no benches yet. Not sure, but don't think my 4790K would do any favors for the RTX 2080 Ti; may prove to be a (significant) bottleneck or not.

Think I'll pass on this series NV.

"Intel announced that it would develop its own discrete graphics cards and divulged that will bring a discrete graphics card to market in 2020".

From what we know about Intel and the resources they have available, this won't be a low end non-performance competitive GPU. Intel has great R&D and may have new technology and designs with something way better than ray-tracing. By waiting until 2020 there will actually be games to play, GPU competition and more wide acceptance of 4k monitors.

"Just Buy It:" ... You going to buy it for me, its only a grand?
Should I also pre-order and buy all DLC 1 year before a video game comes out?
How about a house, I should just pre-order / buy a house with out even looking it over.
Avram Piltch, you are an asshole. I am done with Tom's Hardware.

Seriously narrow-minded view. It was nVidia that said we weren't likely getting new cards anytime soon AND THEN just a short while later announced RTX.

If you're not going to look at the whole picture, your take on this is just as biased as Avram's. Gamers are complaining for a number of LEGITIMATE reasons (artificially raising demand for GTX, lack of transparency on RTX, huge markup on price) and all Avram is doing is basically saying "Screw that, give nVidia your money anyway!"

There is no courage here and the propagandist nature of this article leads me to strongly suspect he's getting some sort of kickback.

"That's what you'd see if you were actually there and participating in the fight."

No, you wouldn't. Much like the pretty surroundings in any fast-paced, run-and-gun game, you'd register the presence of the important things, but pausing to take in the grandeur of the spectacle would get you killed -- just like in real life. So our brains take in what is needed to process the actions at the speed that survival requires. "Bullet time" gives some pause to appreciate the splendor of our surroundings, but unless ray tracing makes it to a Myst or Grim Fandango, your eyes will slide right over the irrelevant aesthetics in favor of survival.

I wonder what the price of a websites credibility is now. It had better be worth it because I think this article had put Toms in a bad position.

Thanks for the excellent background porksmuggler...I knew there was a commercial shift about a decade ago, but your post lead me to wiki "purch group" and find out what other web sites are circumspect.

Regarding Avram disclosing financial interest...it doesn't really matter. You can be sure he doesn't own enough that his opinion moves the value of his stock...even before he destroyed his credibility with this trash article.

all i want to know is when 'your whole life flashes before your eyes,' does it require an RTX card to see it ray traced?
