K6-2 cache and Win 95

I recently upgraded from a pentium 133 to a K6-2 400 MHz.
I formated the c: drive partition and reinstalled windows.
About 95% of the time, when windows 95 OSR2 is loading, it comes up with a Windows protection error when loading "IOS" or a protected memory error. The only way I can fix this is by diabling my level 1 cache in the BIOS. Unfortunately, this slows down the computer. I'm really hoping this doesn't mean I have a bad chip. I thought that "maybe" the online retailer screwed me by overclocking a lesser CPU to 400 MHz. I can't check this because the heatsink/fan was glued unto the CPU. I remember a program that will tell you your chi speed rating. Can't remember though. What do you guys think?

This is a well documented problem, a timing exception in IOS.VXD, there is a patch to fix it.

It applies to Win '95 OSR2 and any AMD K6 processor at 350mhz or above.

I suspect your processor is fine, not sure about running EDO memory on a K6/2 400 though...

Oh, forgot to mention.

You may want to underclock your processor to 300mhz, so you have a stable system while installing the patch.

I had the exact same problem with a K6-2 500MHz. Don't change your multiplier, change your bus speed from 100MHz to 66MHz so your system is running at 266MHz. Then go to http://www.amd.com/products/cpg/k623d/win95_update_k6.html, download and install the patch. Change the bus back to 100MHz and you'll be fine again.
