K7N2 alarm

My daughter had a soyo board replaced with the subject MSI board. It was
installed at a shop. It runs with no problems except she says that
occasionally the machine emits an audible alarm similar to an auto alarm. I
have read through the K7N2 Delta user's guide but have not seen a reference
to an audio alarm.
She uses XP Home OS and is connected to cable.
Any ideas, please?

I've never heard it go off but there is a temperature warning alarm. If
it goes above like 70c an alarm goes off. Now the K7N2's were pretty
whacked out and read really hot when they first came out, so I think a
lot of people were getting false temp warnings, an updated BIOS
corrected the temp discrepancy from reality.

Another possibility might be the CPU fan alarm. Some CPU fans start up very
slowly and might cause the minimum speed alarm to trip occasionally. You
can go into BIOS setup and adjust the minimum speed until the alarms go
away.

Thank you for the kind reply. I did notice in the owner's manual for the
K7N2 MB that the cpu temperatues can be adjusted for alarms: 50, 53, 56, 60
63 66 and 70 C. It is set now at 50 C and perchance that might be the
problem.
Which temperature is best choice?
Best,

First I'd suggest going here:
<http://www.msi.com.tw/program/support/bios/bos/spt_bos_detail.php?UID=393&kind=1>
to get the latest BIOS for the motherboard to make sure the temperature
readings are accurate. You can also update the BIOS using the MSI Live
Update utility, that flashes the BIOS in windows rather than having to
do any other funky stuff with boot disks. Many think flashing your BIOS
in windows is too risky, I've done it several times with no ill effects.
That done, a 60C threshold is a good warning level. That's assuming
your daughter isn't running the mobo out of spec, e.g. overclocking it.
High temps are always best avoided but are not that problematic unless
you're "pimpin' your rig". I overclock my system significantly and
don't like anything going over 45C.
