My OS is WIN 98 SE on a ESC K7S5A motherboard.

The computer runs fine but I just tried to add a USB 2.0 PCI card.

With the card in any slot, the computer will not boot. It gets to starting
WIN 98, pauses for awhile and then restarts and goes to SAFE MODE.

I also have WIN XP Home edition installed on a second drive.

If I use F8 at startup and select booting from the drive with WIN XP
everything works fine.

I would like to keep both WIN 98 and XP working as my parallel port scanner
won't work in XP and my parallel port printer loses some features in XP.

Is it possible to use a USB 2.0 PCI card in WIN 98?

The card came in a box that says: For BEST Ports Connection.
It has the certified hi-speed USB label, 4 external ports, 1 internal port,
and uses a VIA chipset.

Thanks,
ALE

I put a USB 2 card in my K7S5A using Win98. It didn't come with any drivers.
Windows detected and installed it just fine. There is a yellow (!) in Device
Manager beside Other Devices, realizing it is a USB and doesn't recognize
version 2 I guess. In the USB section it shows VIA as being the controllers.
Never had a problem with it.

I installed a NEC USB PCI card under Win98 but although it works fine as
USB 1, I have not been successful in getting it to implement USB 2.1. 🙁
It has been suggested that Win98 can have problems with USB 2.1.

I know that USB 2.0 will work in Win98 because I've used that
combination with two different VIA USB 2.0 cards (Soyo with VIA VT6202
and no-name with VIA VT6212) and also with a K7S5A Pro, which has a
VIA VT6202 USB 2.0 chip built into it. But the USB 2.0 driver has to
be installed (up to ver. 2.58 now) or else all you'll get is USB 1.1.

But are you getting USB 2.0 speed with it? Because without the USB
2.0 driver installed, it works only in USB 1.1 modes, at least with
Win98 and Win98SE. I had this happen with an ALi-based USB 2.0 card
and Win98 because its driver was required Win98SE or later. The
current VIA driver is 2.58, which fixes some wake-up problems with
Win98-ME.

www.pricewatch.com lists some dealers that have NEC-based USB 2.0
cards for as little as $10, and these seem to be more compatible with
hardware than all others, and they support Win98. But some dealers
will ship you a card based on a different chipset without telling you.

Thanks for the replies.
My USB 2.0 card has a VIA VT6212 chip.
Maybe I need to reinstall WIN 98 SE.

Try another slot.USB cards like NICs are notorious for not being ACPI
BIOS compliant coz some hardware makers have been and always will be
lazy F**kers.

In Win98 when you move the card also use Safemode as per,

I think that it would be better to uninstall and then reinstall the
VIA USB 2.0 driver because USB 2.0 support isn't built into Win98SE.

Where can I get the Via 2.58 driver? I did not see it listed on the ECS K7S5A
website.
Thanks

No, I didn't have the driver for USB 2 and didn't think it would work with
Win98, believing USB 2 was only possible starting with 98SE and with some
type of upgrade requested from M$.

If you would look for it on Google, thousands of pages come up where you can
download it. It's a good idea if you learn to use Google before coming here,
then we don't have to do it for you and you'll be better able to help

A Google search of the string [K7s5a driver "Via 2.58"] returns zero hits. I
was assuming that the person making the post in the first place would know a
location that was relavent to K7s5a and the Via 2.58 driver. I don't believe
asking for this was out of line anymore than your response!

Sometimes a search can be too specific, as Al Franken showed his last
book, Lies And The Lying Liars Who Tell Them, pp. 15-16. But a search
for just "VIA 2.58" returned lots of hits, including from ECS, Soyo,
and DFI, and generally any VIA download can be found at
www.viaarena.com, which also has several forums.

Thanks, for some reason I was thinking I needed these drivers for my k7s5a
motherboard, which Smoker just clarified, so I don't need them at this time,
where ever they come from!

Simply type: Via 2.58 and click Search. K7S5A is not relevant to what
you're looking for. How could ECS know you were going to buy a VIA
controlled USB 2 card and install it in their mobo? There's no reason they
should supply that driver "just in case" someone using an old OS that works
with their USB 1.1 cares to upgrade, that's on you or if you bought the
K7S5A Pro, it comes with USB 2.

My bad, I was under the impression that this driver was needed by my K7s5a mobo,
not a card! Thanks for clearing that up.
