CoreCenter says my system temperature is anywhere between 8C and 2C. The
Idle CPU temp looks reasonable at 45C. Looking at the hardware monitor in
the BIOS setup I see similar CPU temps and also reasonable system (temps ~
10C or more below the CPU), so I don't think it's a bad sensor.

Is this a known / common problem?

hi

yes, warning some features in corecenter is awful wrong, like voltage control, the bits
are the wrong way around. check for updates.
