Recently built a new computer due to old one dying.

MSI Z270 Gaming M5
i7 7700k
CM Hyper 212 Evo

Fresh install of Windows 7, installed some updates, etc.

I notice the numbers on the mobo hovering around ~ 70, apparently that's the temperature in degrees celsius. I check with CPU-Z, Hwin64 and bios, all around 70C.

My old i7 4690k was 30C idle, 45-50C gaming with the same 212 evo cooler.

This thing is at 70C idle, nothing open, just looking at empty desktop, I'm scared to play any games on it.

Is this normal? will a watercooler improve the temps? should I try delid?

Ok I've done the following:
- update bios
- clean, reapply thermal paste, make sure 212 cooler is firmly fitted
- manually set all fans (cpu + 3 case) to 100%
- reduced cpu voltage from auto (~1.250) to 1.200

This has improved temps to 55 - 60 idle, still seems so hot when it's doing nothing?

Don't know if this is of any relevance, but kaby lake is not officially supporting windows 7. I suspect it could have some effect on this, but the 7700K is also clocked alot higher than the older 4790K and runs on higher voltage and will result in more heat, which makes me suspect that the hyper 212 is not enough for your 7700K anymore.

First get supported windows

Thanks everyone for the help.

I left my computer on all day searching for windows updates, it searched for about 8-10 hours, once I installed the updates my temps dropped to 45 idle. I will upgrade to win 10 anyways as win7 only supports 16gb ram which has been causing me other problems.

Also Intel has cheaped out again on it's TIM resulting in poorly cooled i7 7700k's.
Delidding and applying liquid metal instead of the nasty cheap crap Intel uses lowers thermals by about 20degrees C (at load), according to people that have done it.
Delidding seems quite risky though on an expensive component so attempt at your own risk.
A vice, block of wood, and hammer are required if you don't have more specialised tools. Or a stanley knife though that increases the risk of damage. None of these items sound like the kinds of things you really want around a CPU.

I looked into delidding, but I don't feel confident enough using my new 7700k as a test subject and voiding my warranty (linus video I watched just looks scary slicing at the cpu with a stanley knife). If Intel is using poor quality materials that results in air cooling being almost non viable, hopefully a recall of some sort will happen in the near future.

In the meantime, I have ordered a watercooling loop EK-KIT P240, will provide an update next week if temps improve further with that installed.

Just providing an update. Watercooling kit hasn't arrived yet, but I've been on the computer last couple of nights noting temps.

I'm not sure what's causing this, but it seems to be very 'sporadic' in the readings. Just doing spreadsheet work, it was idle at 45 - 50, but would have spikes up to 70. Gaming temps hover around 70 but spike to 85 - this is playing overwatch.

Could this be more of mobo issue, like voltage going up and down? It's like the CPU is throwing tantrums all the time :/

I believe windows 7 is causing it. It's not a supported OS with kaby lake, and other people seem to be having the same problem when not running windows 10. If nothing else fixes your issue, you should upgrade your OS or return the cpu if temps get too out of hand.

I have the same problem.

I7-7700K ( stock )
MSI Z270 M7
CoolerMaster 212 Evo
NZXT H440 New ed.

In Windows 10 Pro i get 49-55 IDLE.
In Diablo 3 i get 80c ish
In Battlefield 1 i get 82-85c.
With XMP on i get mutch higher temps. +5-15c

Did Intel cheep out on the heatspreder again? Cant live with this turbo airplane noice of a pc trying to cool it down.
Hopeing for å fix soon. 🙁

I've got

I7-7700k
MSI z270 M7
H100i v2
Windows 10 home

My idle is around 50 as well, but my temps are very "rapidly sporadic" in my opinion. What I mean is that the temp osscilates between 40-55 while idle. I was thinking my problem my be that I applied to much thermal paste or over-tightened my cooler screws. The most annoying part is that the fan curve causes the CPU fans to not even kick in until 55c, so the fans are constantly kicking on and off.

So both of you have win10 and sound like experiencing same problem as me. My first PC impulse buy in 10 years and wish I did some research before hand. I'm not sure if it's the OS, MSI z270 boards or 7700k TIM, but this new build is giving me a headache. I hate win 10 and am tempted to just buy a new build using x99/z170, probably sounds irrational but I just want something stable again.

Your motherboard would work fine with a 6700K, I don't see why you would switch to a Z170. But I'm on the mind that you just need a better cooler. You paired a high-end CPU with an entry-level cooler, and this Kaby Lake i7-7700K (highest frequency in the lineup) runs a bit hotter than all the rest.

You could always install a dual-boot Windows 10 (free .ISO download from Microsoft.com) just to see if it fixes your temps.

Besides your temp issues, how has Window 7 been working? Any compatibility issues you've noticed yet?

My idle temp easily dropped 10c After disabling ''Game-Boost'' in the MSI bios.
It looks like ''Game-Boost'' Just overclocks your CPU with 1 simple click and also increases the voltage a little.

I thinks its no problem to use ''Game-Boost'' if your cooling solution is okay.

I initially had problems with windows updates, the first round I did literally took around 8 hours of searching, like it was hanging for a long time. The other problem I have is sometimes the computer won't restart/turn off, it just hangs on shutting down screen until I get a blue screen with errors that I don't have time to read, I think a driver conflict might be causing this but have no idea which one.

Hi Cerebra,

Did you had ''Game-Boost'' enabled in your bios? This option overclocks your cpu significantly, aslo increases the voltage.
I had a minimal of 10c difference after disabling ''Game-Boost''

I use a custom liquid cooling solution (EK Supreme HF) One 360 Rad and a 140 Rad. My GTX 980 is also in this loop.
Just so you know what to expect:

My 7700k is hoovering just below 40c Idle.
When gaming its Between 60c en 65c.
(''Game-Boost'' disabled.)

Hey knark,

Nah I haven't got Game-Boost enabled in the BIOS, the moment I saw that setting I just assumed it would be some form of overclocking so I disabled and ignored it. Thanks for sharing your temps with a custom loop, like a few others have mentioned my problems are probably a mixture of 212 evo cooler not being the best, and windows 7 not being supported for kaby lake.

I have now got my CPU temp down to 30c IDLE and in games 49-55 on CM 212 Evo.
I just changed the voltage to 1,150v in msi command center. Then tested for 2-3 hours.
After reboot i noticed that the volt was back to AUTO but the temps was still 30c idle and 49-55 ingame.
Maybe there was a kind of bug in it? Mine is fine now after doing this. My fans ar running at 650-790 ish at theese temps.

Setup:
I7-7700K ( stock )
MSI Z270 M7
CoolerMaster 212 Evo ( arctic silver 5 paste )
NZXT H440 New ed.
Windows 10 Pro

( sorry for the bad eng )

Those are very low temperatures! Makes me wonder how low youre room temperature is.
Anyways....goodjob.

I have idle 30-35 and playing kerbal for a few hours with fans on 100% it was 50c

Benchmark test was 70c highest point

Build is 7700k, evo 212. Windows 10 home, msi gaming pro 170a (upgraded from skylake due to trade in offer near me to good to miss)

I know I'm a little late to the party.

I'm using a
7700k
Z270 gaming m3
Noctua dh 14 CPU cooler
Windows 10
And the h440 case.

I'm getting around 25 to 35 idle and up to 70 while gaming. I ran prime95 last night, 2 of the different stress tests on it. Managed to get 70 on one and 100 degrees on the other.

I don't like that 100 though, but I did take my cooler off while building and didn't reapply paste
So I'll do that sometime. I also have 7 fans all at 100% at the moment until my controller gets here.

Just thought I'd throw my numbers in.
