Do you know of anyone not on dial-up that has the problem?

KB891711.exe doesn't muss my IE before I've connected. I can work out of
TIFs before that. I guess something in the Startup Group could be
wanting to get more active after I've connected, though.

Just providing a trouble shooter since those applications can cause
corrupted installs if running. And I remember you said you got a slew of
McAfee Anti Virus updates recently; but if you have it disabled when
installing would be immaterial.
I wonder what the conflict is when you are connected. (?)

Posted on Windows Update site > one was solved by uninstalling Zone Alarm,
reinstalling the patches, then installing Zone Alarm. Another updated their
Zone Alarm. And FYI:
I installed on 98 and 98se and have not been presented with any problem to
date. I tested different schemes with all the animation. I have a firewall
only activated when I connect via dial-up. My antivirus runs at startup,
fulltime background, always disabled for installs. I use no third party web
enhancers.
I show it as 16 bit, running under MPREXE, has one thread, 4 - 12kb in use
(per Wintop). I wonder if something within the MPREXE process has a
conflict.

Nice application isn't it? It's a handy tool to keep around and the task
manager for 9x isn't that good. It's something I try to keep around and feel
comfortable recommending to people who want to explore their systems a bit
more. Wait until you give something like RegMon a try sometime 😉 That's

Interesting issue, take it to either private email or an XP group -- your
choice -- and we'll see what can be done with it. However, PCR's correct...

Beth is on dialup for one. Though the more I look at her posts the more I'm
still incline to think the virus that is/was affecting her is adding to the
complexity and thus can't be sure that the error is entirely KB891711.exe or
the update.

It's an old school app that I hold on to including multiple archived
versions just in case the company ever falls off the 'net. When it comes to
debugging insane problems Process Explorer and RegMon take the cake if you
have the time to do a lot of work. That and Startup Control Panel and you
have the majority of tools that I use for cleaning out junkware when there's
nothing readily available to cure it. One of the MAIN reasons for these
tools is they'll all run happily in safe mode and with any flavor of
Windows. Plus they're all free so I can put them on a CD and give the CD to
a client or a friend for them to use should they ask me what tools I used to
do the job(s).

More accurately that should read (posted in another thread and now see that
it wasn't cross posted as I'd thought the thread was) that I'm on dialup and
have now installed it on an 98 and an ME system and both are dialup. No
problems here but these are just test systems running the minimum additional
software such as a firewall and anti-virus. Firewall is Outpost and AV is
Kaspersky if that's worth anything.

Not a glitch yet. KAV disabled during installation but firewall was up and
running during the whole process on both of them.

USER32.DLL is probably irrelevant to this discussion. Interesting,
though, I bought this Gateway in '98, so both our files are
"post-dated."

Do you see both of these...?...

Tapisrv.exe 4.10.2222 Microsoft Corporation Microsoft® Windows(TM)

I've just downloaded it (thanks for the link, Galen, been looking for
something like this), and it uses 2-3% of CPU at most (cf. Sygate PF at
about 7-8%).

Well... let me click it now... It's green in the Tray, but says "CPU
Usage: 36%", and I can type faster than the letters will render. Well,
it's set to update every five seconds. Looks like at the update is when
that effect happens.

Now, I've opened the window, & CPU Usage is upper 30's/lower 40's.
Although it is set for 5 sec. updates, I'm seeing constant activity in
the upper window. Was the 5 secs. for something else... uh, how long it
retains a closed process in the window... & not for updates at all?

Eek! Now, I've got Explorer.exe's DLL's showing in the bottom pane, &
CPU Usage is... 70%...!!!

It's nice, but seems to be quite a CPU hog to me! "View menu, Update
Speed, Paused" seems to get things back to normal. BUT the CPU Usage
display is frozen at an incredible 98.70%. Commit Charge at 10.82%.
Number of processes at 35. It's Icon in the Tray has turned red & claims
100% CPU Usage!

With all these supposed "updates", it sounds to me like the real CPU usage
over there is around 0 %, if you catch my drift.
