and 3 on the gigabyte gtx 970
i don't think i will oc
here is the build :
i7 4790k
gigabyte gtx 970
ram 16 gb ddr3 2133mhz
and msi z97 gaming
so do i really need one ? and would the build over heat cuz i leave it on for days straight so i need to make sure it is cooled ok

Most likely it`s the stock cooler that you`ve got there.
A custom cooler is recommended for lower temps and lower noise.

If you don`t run CPU intensive tasks and no OC, you will still be Ok with the stock one. However, a custom cooler will be a lot better.

Now, if you`re asking if you should get one, my vote is YES.

A cheap decent cooler is the Cooler Master 212 Evo, and an extremely good air cooler is the Noctua NH-D14 or even the D15 (more expensive than the D14).

i will only be gaming and i don't think gaming would be intensive for i7

Well, if you don`t have the money, go with the stock cooler for now.
But use MSI Afterburner to keep an eye on the CPU temps while gaming.

If at any point the temps are too high or the cooler is too loud, go for a custom one.

not about that it is a new build i have small experience don't want open it myself and install the cooler
