Keyboard don't work on bios

Hello everyone, so my.friend purchased a new hardrive and he called me over the install windows. So I made a usb and I went into the bios but at soon as I enter the bios the keyboard dsnt work. So I googled it and I got two answers. Use a PS2 connecter, but I don't have that. Or reset the battery. So I took it out a waited. But after I plugged it in and booted it still didn't work. So I need a little help to get this worked out. By the ways when I boot into the bios it works for like 5 seconds and stops.

1. Was the computer unplugged when you took the battery out?
2. What is the motherboard?
