Hello I have a kingston sv100s264g, sometimes when I boot my laptop its not recognized and doesn't show up as a bootable drive other times it is.
I read I need to update the firmware but the issue is whenever I try to change my laptop from ACHI to IDE it switches back to achi and when I run the update disk it just boots back to windows.
Laptop is a sager np7358

Welcome, cha0ticbrah!

You shouldn't try to change the SATA mode to IDE. SSDs are supposed and need to be run in ACHI mode.
As for the firmware update, refer to your SSD manufacturer's website for the software and instructions on how to perform it.
Another thing you could try is power down the laptop and re-seat the connections, maybe afterwards the system will be able to detect the SSD properly.
I'd also check BIOS and check the boot priority of the laptop in the first place. Make sure that the SSD comes after the Windows Installation USB/DVD.

Let me know how it goes! Hope this helped! :)

Well, this is very weird! :ouch:
Any SSD should be set in AHCI SATA mode for maximum performance. IDE would make sense only if you are installing an older operating system like Windows XP. But the modern technology in SSDs demands the enhancements AHCI provides. Whereas IDE is rather considered an old-school connection.
The reason that it constantly switches back to ACHI is usually because that was the set SATA mode when Windows was installed on the laptop. Do you have a secondary HDD in the system?
If you do, I'd recommend unplugging it and trying to install Windows on the SSD again, without plugging any other drives. (Otherwise you might experience an OS confusion which would cause booting issues later on.)
Another thing you should definitely try is getting the SSD out and try to connect it to another computer, see how it will get detected, and if you could update the firmware from there as well.

Keep me posted!

That's what I thought when I saw it needed IDE.
Thanks for the explanation, I do have a secondary HDD but while trying to do this update I had to remove it to put my optical drive in. I just reinstalled windows 8 last week because I originally thought this issues was software side which seems to not be that.
I would love to hook it up to a computer but sadly I don't have a desktop at least not yet nor does anyone else in the house. So I maybe stuck unless there's a way to switch to IDE for the time being of updating and switch back to ACHI>

I believe it's possible to switch back to IDE from AHCI through the Windows Registry, however I wouldn't recommend it unless you really know what you are doing. Here are a couple of links to some threads that might shed some light on the procedure:

If you decide to through with this, be very careful and make sure you do a backup of the registry before tempering with it!

Good luck! Hope I was helpful.
