It is ancient history! You've probably been reading old forum threads.
The problem you are referring to happened about 18 months ago. I remember it very well because I had done a little research and posted about it in this forum. Kingston had changed some of the V300 components. Normally that would have been the end of it because the replacement parts were supposed to perform in accordance with listed specifications. Unfortunately there was a glitch in the firmware of some of the V300 ssd's. A firmware update solved the problem. That should have been the end of it but some customers were upset because Kingston switched components, kept the same model number, and did not make it public knowledge. Kingston never provided a detailed list identifying their ssd components, especially the flash memory. Everything was listed using general purpose terms. As long as the ssd's performed according to performance specifications nobody complained. I also need to remind readers that every single component manufacturer also has an "escape clause" which says that specifications are subject to change at anytime for any reason.
The practice of switching components is nothing new. It has been going on for many many years. In the past we have seen DDR3 memory, power supplies, motherboards, and monitor panels with components that were switched. Currently there is a problem with a Gigabyte motherboard. This time Gigabyte switched to inferior parts and kept the same model number instead of a adding a revision number.
Anyway, the problem with the Kingston SSDNow 300 ssd was fixed a long time ago. Kingston is not the only ssd company that has switched parts. PNY does it also.
I maintain the ssd database listed in a sticky at the very top of this forum section. Here is the link:

Scroll down to the SATA 3 ssd section and look for the Kingston SSDNow 300 model or any other brand or model you might be interested in. On the right hand side are links to technical reviews that were published. There are quite a few reviews for the SSDNow V300. There are a few reviews at the very end of the link list that were published recently. Those reviews are for the revised model which will provide you with up to date information.
Personally I would recommend the new Crucial BX100 over the Kingston SSDNow V300. It is a much better value for the money spent.
