Knoppix not using graphics card

I’ve been dealing with this for 3 weeks now. Knoppix 8.1 is not wanting to use my Radeon x800xl for anything else but a vga output. I tried old drivers, won’t work. The Bios see’s it and Knoppix does see it. But it won’t use it for anything else. All the gaming on it is delt with the CPU.
Then it won’t let me set the sensor applet to the one i want. Then it doesn’t see the mobo right ether. Is there anything i can do. I’ve searched it out and got nowhere.

If you want my specs they are
Athlon 64 3700+
ASUS A8N-SlI SE
2 gb ddr400
ac cool heatsink
2 160gb hdd’s
Antec p180b
AC cool after market heatsink for the x800xl
430w rosewill psu. (Thermaltake psu blew up)

Also while your at it could you help me find a cheap athlon 64x2 on 939. But on amazon.

I would not call Knoppix "Generic Linux Distro". Although it's Debian based, it is highly customized for live use. It is not updated regularly as well.

What made you using this Linux version?

I know Knoppix isn’t generic Linux. And I’m using it from past experience. This machine has had Knoppix since i built it. But could u help me with my issue?

Try "generic" Linux distro with your current hardware first, that way you'll know whether it's kernel / disto issue, or Knoppix issue.

So Ubuntu or Debian? The gpu driver only works with Ubuntu 9 and older.

I find (k)Ubuntu easiest to play with (and it has much better user / community support than others). Even trying it in LiveCD mode will let you know what to expect.

Debian I’m pretty sure is the base of Ubuntu and that makes Debian more genaric plus recommend specs fit the cpu better.
