Not being that up to speed on computers I was just passing on the comment of my computer repairer in the hope of getting some answers.
will it be cost effective if I can get hold of a new motherboard

I've been quite impressed with the performance of my 3+ yr old Sony Vaio. Although it hasn't been completely maintenance-free (no laptop is), it is still performing well. I've not seen start-up issues on mine - when I did my searches for a 'known issue', I merely found the 'normal' (IMO) issues that virtually all pre-builts develop with nothing pointing toward one solution or one specific problem
I'm impressed also with how easy it has been to maintain/repair.
Did your repair person mention the part(s) involved? On any laptop (Sony not exclusive here) the power jack often breaks - was it about that or do you remember anything specific other than a start-up issue - not important, just trying to get a handle on this

To determine the cost effectiveness of motherboard replacement, we would need to know the model of your Vaio and what your computing needs are. I think with that information we can give a valid answer
