KT7A and newest video cards

Hello all.

I own a KT7A motherboard (bios version WZ, the original one) together with a
32 MB GF2MX Siluro video card from Abit.
Now the time to upgrade my video card is approaching and I wonder if the
KT7A will support a more powerful video card, like a Nvidia FX5200 Gpu based
one.

Or, in case you guys think it will not work (different voltages?) how far do
you suppose my motherboard can go?

Can anyone help?

Some of these boards have no trouble running newer graphics cards. Some
have major issues ( mine falls into this category ). The earlier revisions
( 1.0 , 1.2 ) seem to be the most difficult (The version number is found on
the barcode sticker on the topside of the motherboard at the bottom LHS left
of the ISA slot). The stumbling block is a poor power feed to the AGP slot.
In my case, it required increasing the I/O voltage in the BIOS from the
normal 3.3v to a dangerous 3.7v, increasing the drive strength (again, a
BIOS option), underclocking the card slightly, and modifying the latency
values with Powerstrip, using Omega drivers, installing the unofficial
latency patch, and sacrificing virgins to the Abit gods. My advice would be
to borrow a card of the type you are interested in buying and try it out
first. I tried a FX5200 in mine and couldn't even boot. I scaled back to a
MX440 and finally managed to get everything working fairly well. I have not
tried ATI boards ( except a 7200 PCI ), but I suspect the issues are the
same.

I have no problems running a 5950 card in my 1.0, however it also has
its own power connector, so perhaps that's why.

Also bear in mind compatibility with older boards can also vary from
brand to brand. If you borrow a 5200 card from, say, Chaintech, and
it works fine, so you think 'ok a 5200 will work fine', then go find a
cheaper Asus 5200, it may not work. I've heard this is especially
true for ATI cards.

True, all models are not the same (for the record, the 5200 & mx440 i've
tried are PNY's). And that is a rather interesting point about using a vid
card with the molex power feed. Maybe a FX5200 ultra would have it, but I
don't think any of the regular 5200's would. Assuming of course that Stefano
wants to stay in that price & model range. I'm tempted to find one now
myself ...

You need to upgrade your bios before you try upgrading the video card. And
just going to a non MX card (64bit) would help tremendously. My 3d speed
went up 5 times when I went from a TNT M64 to a GF2 GTS. I don't need a
lot of 3d speed.

Hey, I'm using Kt7A- v1.1, bios is A9 (latest). I've successfully run a
Gf2-GTS, Kyro2, Hercules 8500LE in past.

Non of these cards had any molex connections, yet they ran fine on my cheapo
q-tec 280W psu.

Currently running Powercolor Radeon 9600SE very stable on same board,
altough with 365W Enermax psu. 9600Se also uses power from agp slot, not
molex.

I'm overclocking the heck out of this card, from 325/400 original up to
380/460 while running games.
Using Radlinker, i've set the card to boot at 150/150, so it's cool while in
2d. I've made profiles for games where card goes to 380/460. Also using a
*big* heatsink from an old celeron, without any fan to make noise, it's very
very stable.

On a side note, that 5200 is not what you might except. Better go for 9600SE
if budget is very limited. Otherwise consider a Fx5500 (faster than 5200,
slower than 5600) or Ati radeon9600. Both are equal priced, and go nice with
this board.

Well, thanks for your help.
One more question: my reseller says it will not work because of a different
voltage required by the newest video cards (a lower one) but your experience
appears to prove the contrary...have you had any trouble with it?

Well.. if you think about agp8x cards, yes, they will work, but on agp4x
speed max.
There was a little problem with the 8500LE card. I was getting bsod while
playing any 3d app. But that was the card itself.

I have never had such problem as no-post, beeping or other problems with
card not starting, like many others. So i can't say it is a bad mobo in any
way.
