Lag when opening files

I am not sure since when the problem began and if it's related to Windows 10, but opening any type of file became very laggy.

I am talking about a PC with SSD and i7 that used to open everything instantly.

Nowadays, if I click on an image, it takes about 5 seconds (showing like it's thinking) and then only then opening the app that will open that file. That second part is very quick as it used to be.
It's like there's something that is being loaded before it opens the app.

Happens with everything, even TXT files!

I don't have antivirus nor defender enabled.

How could I find the reason for that?

Thanks

Intel drivers are fine, checked for malware and Hitman.
It's unrelated.. just something lags down the launch of each app.

I forgot to mention, it happens when opening a file from Windows Explorer, for example if I would just open blank notepad it would be instant.

I don't see such a setting in the power settings.. how do I find it? :)

40GB.

I didn't run the diagnostics, I am talking about a specific problem, not like my whole HD has a problem.. I will do it anyway.

Yes, that's exactly what I think also!
No, not in a domain.

I have opened the RM. How can I check with it?

Thanks!

Hi,
Does this happen in all folders or a specific folder in Windows Explorer ?
If it is specific check folder properties and set it to General Items
If it happens in all folder try the safe mode. If it works well in safe mode then it means a third party software (Non-MS) is acting up.
You'll then have to check which of your startup programs cause this thing by disabling them.
Let me know

Seems like in safe mode it doesn't happen.
Also I noticed that sometimes it happens and sometimes it doesn't.
If I open the same file the second time in a row it will be instant, but the first time SOMETIMES has the couple of seconds delay and sometimes doesn't.

Now I know that I can go and disable startup apps/services one by one, but since we are in the year 2016 I expect something more advanced :)

Isn't there a simple software/tool that will show me what happened after I clicked on that file? Which processes were launched and how much time it took for them to do that?

Please tell me that after dozens years of computing there is such a basic tool that I can use.. :)

Well, In my experience self diagnosis is much simpler. However you can use sysinternals (Windows tool founded in the late 90's i guess) for diagnosing. Using sysinternals requires understanding the processes and being familiar with them. Also requires you to identify the process causing issue by understanding the resources it uses.
Give it a try. You might learn something new.
Good Luck

Well, to begin with I launched Process Hacker and added the STARTED ON column, I sorted by it. So logically, if there's something running BEFORE the launch of the needed app, it should appear there, right?
Well, I don't see anything.

Also, I don't see any changes in the processes, like some that suddenly have higher CPU usage or something like that.

Then you could try and reinstall Windows, maybe another version even. Also, try disabling Superfetch and Prefetch, they write too much onto the SSD.

I could also buy a whole new PC :)
The question in the post is if someone is familiar with the problem or has a method to find the cause of the lag. That is, to see what is happening when the document is being loaded and this way find the problem, not just random guesses :)

But thanks for trying.

I disabled LPM and it didn't help. I don't have a SSD lag. I have a specific problem with opening documents..

I meant that as a last resort solution, not something to magically or immediately solve your problem. Besides, it's a lot less drastic then buying a whole new PC isn't it?

It is less :) but I would like to be able to trace the issue always, instead of reinstalling windows
