Lag with ethernet cable to xbox one

I am having occasional lag while playing on xbox one. It is connected via an Ethernet cord in to a relatively old router (Netgear WNDR4300). I have to frequently unplug the router and plug it back in after which I don't have any lag. On the other hand, wireless works fine with very few issues. I recently updated the firmware on the router as well. Do I need a new router or is there something I can do to fix it. Any help is appreciated.
