(TL;DR below the paragraph)

Most of my friends who have laptops with Igpu's, or dedicated cards get a really big performance boost when they plug in their laptops, but when I plug mine in nothing happens. I have a GeForce 940mx and I've tried different methods like putting the performance to max, changing settings in the Nvidia control panel, and yet nothing makes it perform better. it's been doing this since I bought it, it's a dell latitude 5580.

A friend of mine has a 920mx and gets a performance boost when he plugs his laptop in, and he has a 45watt power supply, I don't with a 100w power supply

(TL;DR : Laptop doesn't get performance boost on charge, whats the solve?)

Per this site;

the laptop should've come with a 65W adapter or a 90W adapter. You've got the wrong adapter for your laptop.

If you bought the laptop used, then return it. If the laptop is brand new and under warranty period, reach out to Dell/seller and show your proof of purchase, then show them the power adapter you got with said laptop. In case you're wondering what the adapter should look like;
