I just bought two ST91000640NS Seagate 1TB 2.5" 7,200 RPM drives.
Both work fine when connected to the SATA connectors in a desktop but not via a USB adaptor.
More important, the ST91000640NS's do not spin and are not detected by either of two new i7 laptops, an HP Envy or an Acer, either when connected directly to the laptop's SATA connectors or via a USB adaptor.
When connected to the laptop, either directly or via the USB, the ST91000640NS drives do not spin and are not visible to the laptop. But, to repeat, work fine when connected to a desktop via its SATA connectors.
The USB connectors I have tried are the Diablotec EN4228s and the Cavalry CABD2BR-BK Bulldog Series. Both work fine with 750GB 2.5" 5,400 RPM drives for example but not with the ST91000640NS's.
For the curious, the 15mm ST91000640NS drive will fit in the HP 17.3" Envy's second drive bay. For the Acer I planned to use the ST91000640NS as a 7,200 RPM 1TB external drive.
Can anyone tell me what I need to do to make the ST91000640NS's work with a laptop, either connected via the laptop's SATA connectoirs or via the USB adaptor as an external drive.
