Laptop- HDD & ODD to SSD & HDD

At the moment, my laptop has a HDD and an ODD, and I would like to replace the HDD with a boot drive (OS only) and use a bay drive adaptor for my HDD. How does this work? Do I just use an install disk to get my OS on the SSD? Do I have to reinstall files?

If you install a new OS on a new drive, yes, you need to reinstall your applications.

The new OS does not know anything about the applications currently living on the HDD.
