Well I picked up this laptop not too long ago (put my gaming rig on hold because of school) off eBay. Paid $440 for it, 15" HP Envy Touchsmart M6-N010DX. AMD 2.5GHz quadcore, 6gb ram, 750gb HDD, 64 bit Windows 8.1, touch screen blah blah blah.

Well seeing as how I have gotten accustomed to my previous laptop with Linux, I'd rather stick with that. Even though I'm going linux and it is a much lighter OS, I'd still prefer more ram.

I went on the HP website, someone has my exact model and asked the same thing. The HP Rep said it supports 16GB DDR3-1600 RAM. On other retail sites it says RAM non expandable. Newegg, Tigerdirect, and a few other sites stated the same thing.

Side question.. I will also be wanting to swap out my hdd for an ssd. My personal take is Samsung 840/850. Is it 2.5"? Haven't dealt with laptop modding before so not quite sure what is what, I'm savvy in the desktop world.

Thanks to whoever responds, and THANKS to whoever helps out.

This laptop looks like its an Ultrabook chassis so its hard to tell, best thing to do, flip it over and open it. Some ultrabooks have RAM thats soldered onto the motherboard which is why it would say not upgradeable and what the HP rep is probably going by is the max memory supported by the CPU. And yes, the SSD physical size you want is 2.5". Most SSDs will be that size already so its just a matter of putting it into the laptop.

I just checked, it has 2 removable sticks of ram. Never buying ebay laptops again. This one was from an HP store. The battery that came with it isn't original but only a "mini" battery. The RAM has 2 sticks one 2gb the other 4gb. the 2gb stick was a weird KCO brand which I never heard of before and the other was samsung.

BUT

Yeah they are removable and my OS now is 64bit so would I be able to jump to 8GB or 16GB?
I read about the bios not reading the whole ram stick if it's above the limit, or the PC wont POST.
Any info on that?

Though ordering RAM from somewhere like newegg.com is cheaper and preferrable. In cases like this, it is better to go to a brick and mortar parts store and buying RAM, buy 2 sets, 1 8GB set (2x4GB sticks) and 1 16 GB set (2x8 GB). Best to try it out. Now ultimately, I think the motherboard only supports a max of 8 since everyone loves cutting corners and cheaping out.

And the best part? Return whatever RAM you aren't going to use or doesn't work out. Just put RAM in, don't worry about the cover until you're happy with the RAM inside there and go into bios and see if it reads it all.

Last bit, personally unless you're doing Autocad 3D, or some crazy graphics program, 8 GB should be more than enough. My desktop, playing 2 games at once (mostly because MMOs is a bit of waiting around) only uses about 6.5 GB of RAM out of the 16 GB that I have. (Money well wasted)

That is a good point, but I wanted to get more than 8GB only because with the current RAM at 6gb having 4 tabs open in my browser my Ram usage skyrocketed to 95%. Right after start up with nothing running it hovers around 50%.
