Laptop Screen lights up but is blank

I know nothing about software or boot menus, so forgive me if i don't use the right terminology.

I have a lenovo ideapad and about 2 weeks ago it randomly crashed. I don't use it for much. Mainly world processing, video streaming and browsing. It was pre loaded with Windws 8 and kept prompting to load windows 10 for free. I suspect something went wrong here.

Now when i turn on my laptop, the screen visibly lights up, but is blank.

I googled a bit, and found pressing shift and F8 brought up a boot menu, but I'm not going to even attempt to try and navigate this.

Is there something I can do to fix this or is my laptop toast?

Hello there,

First thought is that your Windows just crashed and all you have to do is to install fresh operating system.
There are tutorials on YouTube and even on Microsoft website how to install new operating system.
Give it a try before you decide to throw your laptop.
