laptop sound only

when my laptop is connected to the tv with an hdmi cable, the picture comes on the screen, but the sound only comes through the laptop and not the tv.Also my laptop desn't even recognize the tv.

do you mean the laptop screen when "the picture comes on the screen" & not the tv screen? did you access the TV's menu to select the input source is the "pc"?
