So ive decided since webcams are either hard to come by or are super expensive i might as well try to put an old laptop camera to good use. The only issue is i cant get windows to see it as a device, instead it reads device descriptor reqauest failed. Ive tried wiring it all different ways using an old usb cable and nothing seems to work. Ive tried downlaoding drivers from the laptop mfg but i cant tell windows thats what i want. Is their any way i can get this to work?

Very unlikely to be a virus.

And USB webcam pinouts can be easily found on the internet.

For example:

(Note: the link is for example purposes only. I have not tried that USB camera to USB connection nor can I verify that it works. Either as is or specifically for your laptop webcam to USB computer use.)

And you mentioned "old usb cable" - did you check the cable's wires and pin continuity? Could be a broken cable....

Overall problem is likely the drivers and/or the software application to control the webcam.

What version of Windows was being run on the laptop where you got the webcam?

An older version of the drivers might be forward compatible....
