I'm using an ASUS N550JX-DS71T. I cloned my HDD to a samsung 250GB evo SSD. I put the SSD into the old HDD slot and moved the HDD into the optical drive slot using a hard drive caddy at the same time. when i booted the computer, it first gave me an inaccessible boot drive blue screen and then booted up, but it still booted from the HDD. When i run the samsung magician application, it says that the SDD has 0GB used space, so it seems like it is getting wiped clean by windows every time i clone my C drive and restart my computer. I've cloned my HDD to the SSD twice, once with a USB to SATA cable and once while it both drives are inside my machine, and after both times when i restart my computer the SSD seems to be completely empty. How can I switch to using the SSD for my both my OS and my applications while using my HDD for just data storage?

Hi there Tuxworth,

What happens when you get the HDD out of the system? You can try that.
Another thing you can do is to adjust your boot order as iXeon suggested. Set the SSD as your first boot option. You can even remove the HDD from the boot options.

Thanks for the replies! I'm heading to class now, but when I get back I will adjust my boot order in the BIOS and see if that works. If not I'll disconnect the HDD and boot. Will update with results

Changing the boot order was not effective. But I just disconnected the HDD and my computer went from being completely off to having this website up and running in about 7 seconds. Wow is all I can say. If I plug the HDD back in after I turn it off, and boot it back up again, will I be able to format it to just be data storage? Or will it revert to booting from the old HDD?

Yeah, that's what SSDs can do. 😀

It's really strange that this wipes your SSD. What are your boot options? Can you remove all of them except for your SSD? If you can do that, you system should not boot from the HDD.
Do you have a SATA to USB cable? In case you do, you can attach the drive externally after your system boots up and format it.

Thanks for the follow up - the Samsung Magician wasn't properly seeing how much free space was on the SSD. It was all there. I unplugged the HDD, forced teh computer to boot from the SSD, connected the HDD via a USB to SATA cable, deleted the existing partitions, made a new Data partition, and put it back in the optical drive slot using the caddy and everything works amazingly now. Thanks again for your help!
