Laptop wont switch to tv via hdmi

So i got a Dell Inspiron 15 3000 series that has a broken screen. That is not the real issue. My problem is that im trying to upgrade to windows 10 from 8 and everything goes ok up until it restarts and i no long can get the monitor im using via HDMI to work. It wont let me switch to a different screen and only displays on the already broken screen which im unable to see anything from.

Is this because windows 10 is screwing everything up (heard it has hdmi issues) or because its trying to setup windows 10 and until its complete wont allow the ability to switch between screens?

It could be that it is Windows 10. It has lots of lovely issues. And it could also be it is because something that happens a lot when upgrading to or updating 10. If you are connected to the internet when it restarts, it can get stuck in this horrible loop trying to reinstall something that didn't go correctly. Why they have yet to fix this issue, I do not know.

Try making sure there is no possible way for your device to connect to the internet, and then try restarting it. If that doesn't work, you may have to switch to a different display.

I'm having the same problem, even tried taking the laptop screen out as I read that this could fix it
