I have an ASUS B53J laptop running Win7 Pro x64. It has a Seagate Momentus ST9320423AS 320GB 7200 RPM 16MB Cache SATA 3.0Gb/s 2.5" HDD.

I would like to replace the drive with a larger one. ASUS only sold them up to 640GB, so that is all they recommend.

Are there reasons why it wouldn't support a 750GB or 1TB replacement HDD?

ASUS isn't trying to sell me anything. When I asked their tech support, they wrote back:
This model does support 2.5” 9.5mm SATA HDD.
Supported capacities of 250/320/500/640 GB 5400/7200rpm
No brand restriction.

AFAIK, the bios is not locked. I can get into bios pressing F2 on bootup, make/save changes.

I just want to know if there are hardware design issues that would prevent a laptop from reading a larger drive?

Can't anybody give a straight answer? 😀

No, there is no technical reason, except maybe for the 9.5mm. Larger drives with more platters(?) maybe thicker and hence won't physically fit.

happy?
