Latency Issues With Multiplayer Games

Hello, I do not know too much about internet and wifi, but here is what I do know. I bought a new and expensive router about 3-4 months ago and used my old issued At&t universe router/modem combo into just the modem. All I did was just connect the new router into the modem and connected my pc to it using a usb wifi adapter. I cannot hard wire my pc as the router is downstairs and I am upstairs. What I am really confused about is it worked pretty great the first month or two but then slowly got back to the same crappy high latency inducing wifi I tried to get away from. Other people in the house have the same issue with loading things on their phones such as videos and apps. I do not know if this is enough info, but I figured I try.
