I'm a novice when it comes to sound and wish to know which brands/types/models of speakers can be attached to the onboard audio on the Leadtek K7NCR18D-PRO motherboard.

My daughter has Logitech Z-540 4 speaker sound with front and rear jacks and we have only been able to successfully connect the front speakers.

Will it support 4/6 speaker systems and surround sound? Can front and back speaker jacks be connected, if so how?

Also, just what is S/PDIF and how do you connect this up?

Apologies for my ignorance. Any help would be appreciates.

Basically you can connect almost every speakers.
The on board is a 6 channel sound which supports up to 5.1 surround speaker via analog/digital connection.
You can connect the front speaker to the Line_Out jack, the rear speaker to the Line_In jack, and Central/Subwoofer speaker, if any, to Mic_In jack. Then you go to volume control panel, at properties menu select something like "change Line_In (or Mic_In) to rear speaker input" or anything similar. The you'll get 4.1/5.1 surround sound!
S/PDIF is also known as digital sound. It uses a single connection to produce high quality digital sound. S/PDIF has two types of connection, one is coaxial, which is the one you have in your motherboard package while the other is optical, which can be found in many home theater receiver and PlayStation2 as well. To connect via S/PDIF using coaxial which is in your case, you have to have a speaker/receiver/decoder which has the digital coaxial input and you just connect the coaxial output from motherboard to coaxial input on the speaker/receiver/decoder. But I believe Z-540 doesn't have this feature. Am I clear enough?

You never know how stupid you are until you have done something stupid enough for you to realize it.

Your directions are clear and concise.

It took a little while to find the correct menu to change the line-in to rear speakers but it has worked.

Thank you for your help.

The motherboard documentation is not very clear on how to make the change and I could not find anything on the Logiteck web site.

I think speaker connection this is pretty fundamental and should more clearly be spelt out in the motherboard documentation.

I am neither inexperienced nor stupid and I still had difficulty.

Again, thanks.
