Left Flipper works on and off. EIGHT BALL DELUXE

Hi
I am in need of some help. I have no one in the area that can fix my
machines and usually can do it myself. I am stumped on this one though.
The left flipper seems to have a bad connection or something. When I
hold on the flipper button it seems good contact is made at the button
but near the coil when moving wires around I can get it to work again
for a moment. Do I need to rebuild the flippers?
Also on my 3rd and 4th player displays I have to use contact cleaner on
all the pins to get them to work. Then it is only temporary. Do I need
to replace the displays or is there something else I could do? When I
tried a display from 1st player it worked fine in the #3 and#4 spot?
Thanks for any help I can get....

Flipper problem: You might have a broken coil wire. Not the big wire,
but the little wound wire that is the coil itself that connects to the
lug. poke at it to see if there's a break. When the coil is supposed
to fire, do you get the electrical buzz there and is it mechanically
binding? Or is it just not making it electrically? A new coil is
probably the answer.

For the displays, you probably just need to reflow the connector pins.
Although now would be a good time to replace the pin headers anyway.
Should probably solve the problem.

File the EOS switch on the flipper plate and once cleaned make sure it
is tight when normally closed. It should remain tightly closed all the
way to near the end of the plunger travel then open at the last moment
to about 1/8"
If contact cleaner is helping the displays then you need to clean the
connectors. Contact cleaner is a very temporary fix and even if its the
non flammable type it really isn't the best for high voltage connections
like that. Clean the male headers with 600 grit sandpaper or scotchbrite
and see if that helps.

Flipper problem:
When the coil GETS the singnal to fire it will and the flipper is as
powerful as ever. It just doesnt seem to get the signal when the button
is pushed. When i push or move the rear of the coil (the part with 3
wires soldered on it) I can get it to "flip" if I am holding in on the
button.
For the displays:
I probably sound dumb but what does re-flow mean?
Can you buy just the pin headers? If so where? I did see the whole
displays but they are like 50.00 ea!
Thanks again for your help!

Thanks so much
I will try these tips and let you all know what happens.

Re-flow means to add solder to the pin connections. Those connections
tend to break over time, and become intermittent.

What probably happened, was that you have broken joints, but the
contact cleaner effectively bridged those tiny breaks, as it is
somewhat conductive. Seriously though, watch out. That stuff can get
explosive in the high voltage section. Throw the can away now, or you
can be out a backglass, machine, or even face. I know of at least two
people who have had their games erupt into fireballs thanks to that
stuff.

Well I tried to clean the male pins and I still have 2 displays not
working. I can get one of them to flicker and the other one is bright
on the sections of the number that are lit but have alot of missing
sections. do you just heat up the old solder to reflow?
Do you need any special tools or anything. I have a soldering iron but
it's nothing fancy.
It looks as though there isn't alot of room for error!

There's room for error. Take the display board+glass out of the game.
Once you unplug the cable, they just slide out forward. Flip it upside
down on your table/work area. Look at the head pin solder joints. Are
they clean and shiny? If so, you can probably just add solder to them.
If they're dirty/corroded, you will have to remove the old solder
first using either a solder pump or copper braid. The end goal is nice
clean solder beads on the bottom of each pin. Make 100% sure when
you're done that you don't have any tiny solder bridges between the
pins, or bad will happen. Clean up any solder/flux residue with
rubbing alcohol.

Another thing you can try to see if the problem is with the actual
pins, is to unseat the connector just a bit. I learned this tip from
Dr. Dave. There are specific locations where those spring connectors
have been touching the pins for the last 25 years, and have gradually
built up more of a contact resistance. Disengage the connector about
1/8" so that the mating surface becomes a *new* location on the pin.
If that solves your problem, then the pins themselves are just
dirty/corroded, and you should put in new ones.

OK Thanks
The pins look good. I cleaned them up anyhow with some sandpaper and
they are shiny!
After that I tried them and they still wouldnt work.
I then tried to reflow but I just heated the solder up that was there
until I saw it bubble a little and then I stopped. I didn't add any
solder. I tried this on all the pins and I still cannot get either of
them to work.
Should I add solder even if there is some still there? It looks good
what is there already.
thanks again, Larry

So what exactly is the problem with them? I had understood it to be
that they were flickering. Are you saying they don't work at all?

1 is flickering (but barely) the other on has part of all the digits
lit up but the whole number isn't there????

Ok I printed them out.
I will let everyone know what I find out.
thanks again

Thanks for all the replies on these displays and the flipper problem
I read through the guides and was able to get both displays working
again. I had to replace the driver chips on both after I tried to
reflow the pins and changing some transistors.
The flipper problem ended up being one of the contacts. After cleaning
them several times with sandpaper and a file I finally got the Dremel
tool out with a brass wire wheel and polished all the contacts up with
that! Works great now.
THANKS TO EVERYONE AGAIN!

THIS MACHINE IS FOR SALE NOW! I HAD A DEAL GOING WITH SOMEONE AND IT
FELL THROUGH. EMAIL ME FOR INFO OR PICS......
