Howdy I recently came into possession of a Lenovo thinkstation Sr 630 V2 7x02 and I was wondering if I could use a pcie to M.2 adapter directly inside the pcie slot on the motherboard without the pcie Riser from Lenovo to use the nvme drive as my boot device

I'd say: No.

M.2 PCI-E add-on cards are usually full height, while your server rack is 1U and supporting only low-profile PCI-E cards, in 90 degree angle compared to MoBo.

Only way to use M.2 PCI-E add-on card without riser, is when you don't have the server in the rack and it's top panel is open.

But this will mess up the airflow path within the server, making it's CPUs most likely to overheat and cook themselves.

I am using this add in card whitch fits into the 1u chassis with the top cover on , sorry I didnt specify, the reason I am asking is because I have it plugged in but the definition dies not recognize that there is a drive installed , I was wondering if I needed the lenovo riser part to make this work for any weird reason

Have you made sure that the M.2 drive works? E.g plugging it into 2nd PC M.2 slot directly and looking if it shows up in BIOS.

As for 1U server rack, does the M.2 show up in BIOS? Also, is that PCI-E slot enabled within BIOS? It should run in at least x4 mode (4 lanes). x1 and x2 modes are too less for M.2 operation.
