Lenovo laptop T450s does not recognize minidisplayport outlet

I have a t450s with a minidisplayport outlet in it but when i plug in a mini DP i cant get a monitor to work. it doesn't find an other screen to show the display on.

Press Windows + P together at the same time and select either Duplicate or Extended depending on your choice while the other monitor is plugged in. Could be that your laptop is not automatically set to detect the other monitor plugged into your DP port.
