Lenovo TS140 Trying to install GPU: GTX 960 or GTX 970 mini will they work?

You will need to replace the power supply and then they should work.

I have a corsair cx500 installed. The card works with generic drivers but with Nvidia drivers loaded it boots to a black screen after the starting windows splash screen. any suggestions?

I haven't done this, I'm running a GTX 750ti without problems, but do you have Intel graphics drivers installed? Those may need to be uninstalled due to conflicts with nvidia's driver.
