That is part, but the majority of spam is spoofed or dumped in through hacked accounts or grey email servers.

What NEEDS to happen is a revamp of the email system to add something like DNSSEC, eliminate spoofing, increase security on existing systems, etc. Stop leaving the back door for them to come in at.

A lot of spam comes in from compromised connections.

Are there actually people in this world who still can't distinguish regular email from spam?

I can't but wonder if some of this is the result of users becoming more savvy about SSL, especially the green url bar of extended validation ssl that I'm often educating folks on through my gig with VeriSign. People are just more wary of clicking on links, and the above stories about Nigerian royalty are, well, other stories entirely!

Malware is still a serious problem, and a lot of is still being distributed via email, unfortunately. But it's good to know that this trend is improving, and that technology like EV SSL is making the difference it ought to.

Spam..no matter how harmless..is a waste of time & resources..advertising should not be rammed down our throats..it should be available only when we request for it..like the yellow pages..lump all ads in one place so we could search for it when we want it..
