I bought an LGA 1551 MB recently and was wondering if I could put a i3 540 in it.

lga 1151 take 6th or 7th gen. depend on the bios

go to the motherboard manufacturer website to check the cpu supported list

You need LGA 1156 to use i3 540.

Whoops, my bad. I meant I bought an 1151 Mother Board and was going to buy that cpu but didn't know if it would work. This was the motherboard https://www.asus.com/Motherboards/H110-PLUS/

It will not.

You already know where the motherboard's support site is! Just a couple more clicks and you can look at the CPU support list yourself.

Anything requiring BIOS 0204 version will likely work just fine, but things that require later BIOS versions may not be updated in your motherboard. Typically there's a printing or a stick on the motherboard or the box that tells you what BIOS version you have.
