Lga 775 gamin cpu

I am looking to upgrade my cpu which is socket 775. I need one for gaming and ive been researching some. Should i go with a quad core or dual core?and can u give me suggestions on which cpu of socket 775 is best for gaming?
My mobo is an asrock g41mvs3
I am also going to get a 750ti.

Don't waste money on a dual core from that era. Look into one of the Core 2 Quads. Here is the CPU support list for your motherboard: http://www.asrock.com/mb/Intel/G41M-VS3/?cat=CPU
If you can find a used C2Q at the top of that list, that would be the way to go.

I found a deal on ebay. I found a q9400 or $31 and a q6600 for $26.
Which one should i get for the best gaming performance?

The Q9400 with its slightly higher clock rate should be your best bet.
its got less L2 Cache but that shouldn't affect much for gaming.

You can try overclocking it some to get a little more performance too.

That mobo should also support a number of modded quad core Xeons for cheap. E5450 comes to mind

The Q9650 is the best CPU you can get for your motherboard. Given your mobo is on the G41 chipset, you probably CAN'T overclock. So you'd better get the Q9650 instead of the Q9400.
