I had been advised in another thread to upgrade my system instead throwing good money after bad on an old system. I plan to do that now but will use some of what I have. I would like for you folks that stay up with things to comment here. The new items CPU, motherboard, etc are with budget in mind. Thanks for your comments.

Plan to buy

AMD Ryzen™ 5 5600 6-Core, 12-Thread Unlocked Desktop Processor with Wraith Stealth Cooler

GIGABYTE B550M DS3H AC (AM4 AMD/B550/Micro ATX/Dual M.2/SATA 6Gb/s/USB 3.2 Gen 1/PCIe 4.0/HMDI/DVI/DDR4/Motherboard)

Corsair VENGEANCE LPX DDR4 16GB (2x8GB) 3200MHz CL16 Intel XMP 2.0 Computer Memory - Black (CMK16GX4M2E3200C16)

Windows 11

Replace? With?

PowerColor Red Dragon Radeon RX 560 14CU DirectX 12 AXRX 560 4GBD5-DHA 4GB 128-Bit GDDR5 PCI Express 3.0 CrossFireX Support ATX Video Card

Will use what I have from my current machine

ZALMAN Z3 Black Steel / Plastic ATX Mid Tower Computer Case Compatible with Standard ATX / ATX12V

Seasonic FOCUS GX-750, 750W 80+ Gold, Full-Modular, Fan Control in Fanless, Silent, and Cooling Mode, 10 Year Warranty, Perfect Power Supply for Gaming and Various Application, SSR-750FX

DVD writer (are these even necessary anymore?)

Dock for backup disk writing (use Casper)

2 TB SSD recently purchased

Would like a built-in card reader but haven’t had the best of luck with these.

^ not really. Just update the bios in your system and you are good to go.

take my build for example - i built it last week. my mobo had a June '23 bios. with 2 of my 6000mhz cl30 sticks, it throwed a DRAM led post error. After bios update with 1 stick and enabling EXPO in bios, everything was set for my dual channel 32gb ram kit. This is for DDR5 and ryzen 7000 series.

You are planning on Ryzen 5000 series with B550 mobo. the platform and rams are matured enough to work with bios update. no need to be picky with rams as long as its a matched dual channel kit.

if you are in the US, try for the X3D chips. you have 5600X3D, rumors about a 5700X3D launch and a 5800X3D. good performance for the price.

as for the gpu replacement:

I'm a bit confused by your response. I am in the US.

The b550 ang ryzen 5000 series are old/stable and use tried and tested ddr4 rams. It's not bleeding edge new tech like ddr5. The problems faced are for ddr5 and ryzen 7000 series. Even then, a bios update fixes most of the issues.

When you get the rams, install 1 stick in a2 slot, update mobo bios and enable expo settings in bios settings. You would be good to go.

I am suggesting x3d models for the performance.

Ok, thanks. Appreciate the input

After looking at several things, I've decided to go with this. I am 70 years old and don't game. I used to draw house plans but no longer do that. The only thing I do that calls for this upgrade is run Lightroom and Photoshop. They all show to be compatible.

Can I get comments on these components? I have everything else I need.

Thanks.

If you need 32GB of memory then buy a 2X16GB set of memory not 2 separate sets.

If you don’t game you might opt for the 5700g as that has integrated graphics and you wouldn’t need a separate video card. I would not recommend buying the 5800x though as those are known to run hot and I don’t see a cooler budgeted here.

The other thing, don’t buy the ram as 2 kits like that. It would be better to buy a set of 2 16gb sticks as a kit. Should run 50-60 dollars.

Edit I do see a cooler budgeted but not sure if that one is enough for a 5800x. If you get a cpu without integrated graphics, look into the 5700x. 95% of the performance of the 5800x but should run cooler due to lower wattage.

Thank you. There is a cooler listed as the third item but if this is more than I need for what I do, perhaps I should drop back to my first choice that was recommended here. I would prefer separate graphics, just in case.

I’d take a look then at the 5700x. Really both are probably more than you need, if you think you may want 8 cores I think you are only talking 20-30 bucks maybe. Totally up to you. But instead of the 5600x, I’d look at the plain 5600. It’s not far behind the 5600x even for gaming and should save a little.

Truthfully though if you are not gaming and doing heavy workloads and are basically using this for web browsing and word processing you could even look at the ryzen 5 5500. It should only run about 100 bucks vs the other CPUs. Yes it’s a hair slower and yes you do give up pcie 4 capabilities but if you aren’t gaming or doing a lot of file copies you won’t really feel much difference. I actually had one for a while in my gaming pc and it’s a decent little cpu even if you go up to like a 6700xt for gaming, maybe even higher. So I think I’d look at that, maybe see what a b450 board runs, should be less, and even though the b450 boards only support pci e3, if you went for the ryzen 5 5500, that’s all the speed you’d get anyway. Then you could put the money into a better gpu, nicer monitor etc.

Thanks very much for your time and advice. I agree on the 8 cores. I think I know what to do now.

I ended up going with a Ryzen 7 5800x processor but the fan I ordered IMO is overkill for my purpose. No gaming and this thing has pipes coming out of it. I think a heat sink fan is what I need. Can anyone recommend a fan cooler for me to use? I also will use the Gigabyte B550 UD AC motherboard. The link to the fan I bought is below. Thanks.

Edit: Maybe this fan is ok and will fit fine?

I’d go with this personally.

It looks huge but it’s easy to install. You just basically bolt some pieces to the stock backplate for am4 I think and it’s 2 screws to secure it.

I’ve got a white version with rgb fans on my i5 12600kf and stays near 60 under load.
Thanks for the info. Is the tubing necessary for this particular CPU? Does that come in a non-lighted version?

Just search Amazon for the Thermalright peerless assassin 120. I think they have about 6 variations.

Tubing? Unless you are doing water cooling I suppose. That’s an air cooler that should be able to handle that cpu I’d think.

I forgot that my old heatsink had tubing as well. Not for water. I used the one I bought. I have it put together byt haven't been able to install Win11. Fortunately, I had a bootable backup to start the machine. I want to upgrade now with the flashdrive.
