It suprises me no one suggested a KVM switch, the only limitation is that you cant drag programs from one pc to another, but you can watch a movie on the one and switch to the other for browsing. Might be worth a try....

I don't have the time to read through all 900 replies, but I'm suprised one of the first ten didn't mention Linux. Comeon, this is pre-school stuff! (Well, for me anyway). Do some research on Linux and Overclockix, though I don't see how 400 mhz will help much (And you might need to hunt around for a distro that supports PPC).

Considering how slow that is, it might actually slow down the other computer since it has to wait for the slower one to work on the network, interpret commands, etc... Then take into account just the power it takes to run an OS, all the services on it... You're better off getting a new computer. A quad core desktop should do you some good.

If you want massive speed for under $500, try getting a computer with 2-4 gigs of DDR3 ram, a hard drive with at least 7200 RPM (15k might go a bit over $500 but it'd definitely worth it), an eSata port (You never know when you'll need it), Ethernet (wired makes wireless look like dialup and it's cheaper. a 100 foot long cable only costs $20, which is $60 less than a standard wifi card, and Ethernet comes standard in almost every PC today), and try to get XP on it. If you can't, that's okay. It doesn't matter much since you'll want to install Linux and use that, primarily. Dual-boot if you got xp or if you're new to Linux, otherwise overwrite Vista and use an ext3 file system. The closer data is to the center of the hard drive, the faster it can be used (It makes no sense, but it's true).

Now find a small Linux distro that can be loaded entirely into RAM. If configured properly, you should boot up in under twenty seconds and you'll be absolutely amazed by the speed. As an example... It takes about five to eight seconds to load Firefox on the average computer. This system would load it in under one second, usually in just under half, though your mileage may vary. It takes Windows about forty seconds to start up, and slowly gets longer since it manages files badly. It should take under twenty seconds for your first boot with Linux, and provided you update it properly, never go over twenty two.

If you'd like help in working with Linux or some information on where to find a good computer, just ask.

err KVM is a box where you plug ur PS/2 and VGA stuff into it (if its that old then maybe something else) it will then split the signal to multiple computers that you can toggle on the KVM, so you can use one set of controlling device on more than 1 computer.

as long as you have the compatible controller and wires and all that, it would work, it would be independent of the OS or machine.

next time read through. BUB :sarcastic:

Well, there is actually one software that will utilize this, supposedly regardless if you have 1 mac and 2 PCs, or whatever. This program is Nuendo, it is a music production software. Basically, Cubase on steriods. It runs about $1200, but it won't do anything that doesn't have something to do with music. I will say though 400mhz these days won't even get you emails faster.

I have a 4 port KVM switch currently running three PC's. Saves a lot of desk space because I only need one keyboard, mouse, and monitor. I save one set of cables for testing. But they are still separate computers.

I am working in Saudi Arabia in a "bachelor" assignment, so it's not like I have a real life anyway. :)

Naw - wouldn't work. The OP now wants to take 2 small Macs and make a Big Mac outta them 😀.

As we all know, Intel's double-cheeseburger glue is not edible and therefore banned by the FDA, not to mention in Europe 😗

It is probably similar to the boner you got as you stepped up to the altar to chastise.

Also, "computer related" should be hyphenated in this construct. "Forum's" [sic] should not have an apostrophe. "in which I had to sign up..." begins a mis-constructed nonsensical fragment. "done" should not be followed by a period. "most every single one of you" should be "most of you". "higher then thou" [sic] should be hyphenated and "then" should be "than". "honestly" is extraneous. "self pleasure" should be hyphenated. "this gives you by..." begins a sentence fragment that is malformed in several aspects. "matter of fact" should be hyphenated, and should agree with the adjectives "bluntly" and "diplomatically" in form (matter-of-fact is not an adjective). English sentences do not begin with "and". "and for what does this serve" begins a malformed sentence. "no", being used not for its semantics but as a token, should be quoted. "(comma) all it shows" is ungrammatical. "ego's" should not have an apostrophe. "even if undoable" is nonsensical in this context. One does not "make" a question, one "asks" it. One is "embarrassed by", not "embarrassed of". "Because..." begins a sentence fragment. I ignored misuses of "that" and "who".

oh, sorry, my keyboard malfunctioned. I intended to type "f*** off".

AND, METHINKS that guy needs help!!!! ....................................... TROLL! Who Freaking cares about the Flippy flackin Grammer. We get our points across and whenwe are so jacked up in grammer most people who misunderstand may ask .... "HUH? What was that?" Now the ones with ego problems noramally post crap like that.

You should try this site here

To Do what you want to do you would have to use the grid computation theory. Its the SAME WAY all of the space observatories combine their computers for maximum performance. Science Laboratories Do the same thing when they ask you to download their screensaver to utilize your idle system to crunch LARGE numbers in about a week as opposed to 3 months.

Im adding to a previous post. This is a link to a free program to do what your trying to do.

The great thing about grid computing is that the common rule where your system is as fast as the slowest component dont apply here. Its as fast as the slowest network hub(router). 😀

In grid computing and clustering the router or network hub is still a component of your system!

This grid computing may be nice for adding heterogenous systems to the cluster. I use M$ Server 2008 HPC edition right now to get the results I desire, but this java has already proven itself to let me add a PPC Mac to the loop!
