there is zero reason to use windows. gaming is better on Linux because of Steam and protondb. older windows games run better with wine and lutris than on modern windows. emulators run better on linux. gpu drivers are better on linux. and if you really want windows for something obscure, you can run it in a vm.
Hahahahahaha!!! :ptdr:

if linux was so much better, it would have more market share. there is NO way i can even see my mom, or other older people using linux for what you have said above. over all its just to complicated for them, heck, even more complicated for most people. while you think there is zero reason to use windows, seems the general market share of windows vs linux, seems to disagree...

i could care less how popular it is or how much market share it has, i'd use it even if it was most popular or least. its about privacy and performance. if you have the technical skill and I assume you do if you are on this forum, if you know better, you would want better privacy.

Putting aside the specific debate of OSs, popularity obviously depends on more than just pure performance/functionality. Marketing, previously established market share, which came out first, what is used by your friends/family/workplace all play a role. Saying that product X is the most popular and therefore must be the best is just silly.

enjoy your telemetry and random background OS connections and processes you have zero control over.
I don't enjoy those things and cut back on the telemetry that I am able to. But you are moving the goal posts. Saying that Linux is a better gaming platform than Windows is just nuts. I dual booted Windows and Linux for a while. I assure you, Linux is not a better gaming platform. A typical user would probably rather have rabies than deal with Linux. Great OS, horrible OOB experience. Too many cmd line tweaks needed to do things that most WinOS users wouldn't understand - heck, even some Linux help sites get stuff wrong in a bad way.

Well - offer people the ability to gain super powers, everybody says "yes give it to me please" - but once you demand people to actual work and train for results and for them to actually become able to use the super powers, they decline and say the annual flu is just so much easier to deal with - no work needed.

I'd say there is a very good chance you will manage to install a modern Linux distro just fine without dealing with terminal commands.

And frankly - why not? Just image being able to:
  • Log into another computer on the network, do whatever - e.g. turn the computer in first floor off remotely.
  • One command to copy/import any files in a folder located on another computer in the network to your local computer.
  • One command for folder backup - with versioning.
  • Couple of commands to tell your OS to update any software you have installed (I know I prefer this long way before the Windws-way (download from software web site, then execute exe file, then delete exe file - for each and one of whatever software is installed).
    • Or - if you want to update only a choosen few software packages instead of everything, then just make a simple script.
Just a very few examples that I came up with just now.

heck, even some Linux help sites get stuff wrong in a bad way.
Do you happens to have a concrete example on this ?

if you have the technical skill
and thats why it has the market share that it does, for the majority, its too complicated to set up and use, deny it all you want, but would your parents, or other people be able to use it ?

but i also dont have the patience to look things up, or read manuals and help files inorder do things, nor do i have the time to spend trying to explain how to do something to my wife or parents. with windows, they already know how to do 90% of the things they need to do.
if you know better, you would want better privacy.
and alot of good that does it most of what you use, works in windows just fine, for me, thats games, i tried linux before, no thanks.

purpleduggy, i also noticed you didnt really touch on the aspect of parents or others using linux, would YOU be ok spending what could be hours explaining how to do something in linux, probable over and over to some one that you show only a few times how to do in windows ? face it, while linux might be better at some things, ease of use for most, is just not there.

In regards to computers, personal privacy and personal security are not the same.

"Privacy is the right to control how your information is viewed and used, while security is protection against threats or danger. In the digital world, security generally refers to the unauthorized access of data, often involving protection against hackers or cyber criminals".

Some operating systems rate better for security. And some people use that security to protect their privacy. But, there is no public OS that can give you 100% of both. In other words, if you have something someone else really wants, they'll get it.
