I know this is a long post, but I would greatly appreciate it if anyone with spare time on their hands could read it.

My computer has been working fine and has had no viruses since I installed windows 8 ( a couple months ago) but today, it was working, and I restarted then the mouse and keyboard would not unlock the screen no matter what I do! Normally, when I click or press a key, the screen would slide up and it would ask me for my password, but now it won't work.

I've tried different mice and keyboards and have confirmed all of them working on different machines. My mouse and keyboard work in my bios and windows 8s shift f8 mode. I've tried different ports. I've tried unplugging every USB port and then plugging it in on the lockscreen. I've successfully been into the shift f8 mode and tried several options. Safe mode yields the same result. I tried to do different system restores but it gives me an error report about something to do with my antivirus, avira. After a Google search, I found out avira protected systems can't do system restored until avira is uninstalled which I can't do right now.

While in the lockscreen, I have several signs that the system isn't just completely frozen. The time changes. When I unplug my USB WiFi adapter, the WiFi icon changes and it changes back when I plug it back in. At first, my keyboards volume knob does nothing but after spamming all the buttons a not, spinning the volume knob does change the volume, as indicated by the windows 8 volume meter.

Please help, I need to use my computer! I would prefer not to have to restore it because I do not want to lose a 2tb HDD worth of stuff. I either need to find a way to uninstall avira without access to windows and then try and system restore, or find a fix for the issue itself.

I tried to follow a guide online on how to uninstall programs with cmd but it failed. I typed in wmic and that command worked, the next step was to type in product get name but that gave me an error code and it said invalid class. After doing some research I found out that x64 systems don't come with wmic pre-installed but I can't install it without access to windows.

Specs:

Windows 8 professional x64
12 GB Kingston hyperx 1600 MHz ram
Stock amd phenom ii x6 1050t 2.8 GHz cpu
And gigabyte 6850 gpu
Asus m4a89gtd pro/usb3
Microsoft sidewinder keyboard
Logitech m500 mouse
Alfa awus036h WiFi adapter

Thanks in advance.

Edit: P.S. when in safe mode, the lock screen is for some reason skipped. It starts of at the password entry screen but the mouse is nowhere to be seen and the keyboard does nothing. The typing line thing is blinking though.

If you can get to the advanced boot options you can try to Roll-back the OS. If that doesn't work the next step would be to Refresh the OS. This will retain your files but you will also need to reinstall all your desktop apps.

If by roll back you mean system restore, I tried that and like I said, avira antivirus won't let me system restore and I can't uninstall avira because I don't have access to the system.

Since I didn't get a physical disk of windows 8 ( I downloaded an upgrade for windows 7 ) I will try and burn a windows 8 disk so it will let me refresh the os. It says I need an installation disk to perform a refresh.

So let me clarify, refresh only uninstalls apps, and my desktop stays the same? Because I don't use the windows 8 part of windows 8, 99% of my usage is in the desktop part, I don't use a single app.

I'm going to assume this a custom built machine and not a box chain build.

There is more information in regards to the PBR (Push Button Reset) features built into Windows 8 (which are actually really cool) found HERE .

If you're not afraid to use the Command Prompt, there is an article by ExtremeMag, found HERE , that may work even better for you.

Yes it's a custom built machine. I will give refreshing a try. I looked at that built in backup cmd and the downloads and music folder aren't listed there. Is there anyway to backup my downloads folder as well?

At worst, if none of this works, I'll be forced to buy an ssd and install Windows 8 on that and recover data from the old HDD through windows on the new ssd. I don't really have much money to shell out on an ssd though so that will have to be an absolute last resort.

I can't believe this is all from me not being able to use system restore cos of a stupid freeware antivirus. Looks like I'm going to have to renew kaspersky and get rid of that bullshit that prevents you from system restoring. They might as well make an antivirus that doesn't let you use your mouse and keyboard if they're gonna hinder necessary features like that.

I got my hands on a windows 8 disk and did a system refresh. Thanks for the help guys.

And also, *** you makers of avira, I have now lost hours of time installing the drivers that I lost in that refresh, instead of a system restore, I had to do a refresh cos of your shitty freeware antivirus. Please learn how to make a ******* antivirus and also, I hope all your computers protected with that avira bullshit get this problem so you lose all your data cos of your bullshit freeware that prevents users from doing a system restore. Have a good day.

Edit: I just looked at the list of apps uninstalled and realized that I've lost over 100gb in games that I don't have the physical disks to. Where I'm located, bandwidth isn't unlimited and that is a lot of it. Once again, *** you avira, I hope you all die. But not any sort of death. I hope you are all repeatedly hit in the balls with a sledgehammer while being forced to drink liters of bleach while having every hair in your body slowly pulled out with tweezers. That are on fire. And while that is happening, thousands of killer [strike]wasps[/strike] eagles, that's right, ******* eagles, are biting into your skin. And all this is happening in a man sized oven going at 9001 degrees Celsius. And when all the hairs have been pulled out, they will be assembled into a cannon ball that will be shot down your throat so fast that it will come out your ass. When it comes out, it will be repeated. When you are just ashes, your ashes will be put in a grave that will be graverobbed and vandalized regularly. I don't just wish that death upon the founder of avira, not just the people that decided to make it so that you can't do a system restore, but every single person that has worked for avira in their life.

Man I'm having the same problem since 2 hours agi but i didn't install any antivirus but yesterday i did install the castelvania lords of shadows 2 . I don't know what to do.

i am facing this problem several times when i install driver downloaded from my laptop's driver provider (acer support) .this happens 1 month ago,and i recover all data using usb live install backtrack and and again i reinstall win8.1 it works fine but yesterday when i try to install driver from previous backup and i restart the system then again it happen... I cant find any confirm reason why lock screen appears and i have no solution too ....some people on internet says its lockscreen virus..
Now i am going to recover my all using usb live backtrack on my external hardisk....you can recover your data using any live operating system.
