Logitech Scroll Wheels

I've heard about the awesomeness of the Logitech scroll wheels, the one where it just keeps going when you scroll. I've tried it in a Best Buy, and it seems pretty cool. Is it useful in practical use? I'd mainly use the mouse for gaming. Here's the mouse I'm eyeing. http://gaming.logitech.com/en-us/product/g502-proteus-core-tunable-gaming-mouse. Does the scroll wheel justify getting a Logitech mouse?

I have a Logitech PerformanceMX. Scroll wheel can change between a clicky type scroll, to free-running.

I find the free-running VERY useful in a long webpage. One flick of the finger, it zooms back to the top.
It may be useful for gaming...all depends on your personal preference.

the "hyperscroll" wheel does have certain situations where it may be useful such as usafr mentioned however its more of a pain to deal with generally. the mouse wheel can accidentally be bumped and scroll or you can scroll too far since it will not stop until you manually stop it.

for gaming it is often much more practical to have a mouse wheel with a very pronounced clicking on the scroll wheel as this allows good accuracy for things such as selecting items, changing zoom levels and other tasks. most gamers look for mice with such scrollwheels.

of course some people might not like the clicking in scroll wheels which might make hyperscroll seem like a good idea. one issue however is that it spins too easily which may lead to scrolling more than you inteneded.

i've used the proteus and its scroll wheel leaves much to be desired. while it does have a button you can click to disable hyperscroll it feels as if you are rotating the mousewheel shaft which has splines on it ontop of some sort of peg inside. in other words it feels like it is bouncing overtop some sort of obstacle which feels a little odd. while it has some clickyness to it it is not near as clicky or good as some other models on the market so if clicky is what you want then you might want to think about it more.

otherwise, the proteus is a nice mouse. the buttons are in a great location and its fairly comfortable to use. i returned it because the mouse wasnt wide enough for my hands and grip which caused discomfort but this may not be the case for all.

typically mice like the deathadder, kone, and other gaming mice use clicky scroll wheels and are considered a better idea. i used to like the logitech gaming mice before they started the whole hyperscroll nonsense and the only reason i tried out the proteus is because it had the click on/off for hyperscroll (did not work good enough for me) and because i managed to get it for $25 off the retail price.

of course those are just some reasons to think about... whether or not you like hyperscroll is your own opinion.

as for what i do for long webpages.....

i usually just page up with my clicky scroll wheel but sometimes i use the pg up key on the keyboard but there is also a very quick scroll if you press the mouse wheel button down. a circle with 4 directional arrows appears on screen and if you move the mouse in a direction it will autoscroll and rather fast (as fast as hyperscroll sometimes) with less effort.

although i suppose we all have our own methods. whatever works best for you is what you should go with.

Yes, in free-running mode, it moves at the slightest touch. Not even touching the wheel, but just moving the whole mouse....

Not really good for gaming.
